The SNES has two virtual screens where backgrounds and objects can appear, and those two screens are combined together to produce a final image to put on the screen. I acknowledged its existence in SNES Features part 3, but this video goes into more detail.

Hopefully the visuals are adequate enough to get all the points across--there are so many ways to flip the switches and settings that it would be impossible to show off every possible combination.
