You probably already got an email about how Patreon's payment structure is changing later this month. If you haven't, here's a summary: Patreon wanted to ensure that creators got 95% of pledge amounts, so they pushed transaction fees over to the patron. Now instead of you pledging 100% of your pledge and me receiving ~85%, you'll be paying >100% of your pledge to cover transaction fees and I'll get 95% of the 'pledge'. I'm not going to say I entirely agree with what they've decided to change, but I will say that I totally understand if you need to reduce or drop your pledges because of this new system. From what I understand, if you pledge a little bit to a lot of different creators, you're going to get dinged the hardest. So don't feel bad if you need to limit your spending. :)

Any chance there is another site or way we can support if we do decide to switch how we're supporting people? Definitely not a fan of this new change, it was very poorly thought out and executed. Shows that Patreon doesn't have the best interests of the communities in mind. Haven't decided what I will do with those I'm supporting yet, but I don't want them to suffer for Patreon's poor decision.

It is very much a bad thing. It incentivizes me sponsoring fewer people at higher amounts versus more people at smaller -- WHICH IS THE WHOLE POINT OF PATREON! :-) See: https://twitter.com/skyintist/status/938544611680808965

I'm not going anywhere.

I did a write up of the changes in case anyone is curious: https://medium.com/@AberrantWolf/game-balance-patreons-new-fees-f65e6e477379 But in short, I don't feel like it's a cash-grab, it sucks a lot for small donors, and Patreon did a really awful job of presenting it and justifying it.

I don't think it's a cash grab either, but one simple change could have made it /much/ more palatable -- the transaction fee should actually be PER CHARGE, not PER PLEDGE. But it's not (at least, it's not advertised to be). I have several patreons I support and under the new system I'll be charged 2.9% + 0.35c (which by the way isn't a great rate -- for bulk customers, getting a better processing fee is not that hard so surely they could do better if they want to claim this is their actual rate) PER PATREON PER MONTH. The 2.9% is fine, it's the same either way. The 0.35c though hurts for lots of small dollar donations when in actuality Patreon is only paying that kind of processing fee ONCE. Where does the extra fee go?

OH. I didn't realise the fee was PER PLEDGE, I thought it was per charge! It makes absolutely no sense given your card is only charged once for all pledges.

Dave Jones of EEVBlog did a good video about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDt_WXnEnw0
