I was born in Xian and left with my family only after a few years. Nearly all of my memories of the place was of seeing grey everywhere. That was the 80s. Even as recent as January 2019 when I revisited, it was still the same greyness that I remember as a child. Of course, thanks to winter, you don't see any hints of green and the only bright colors you'll ever see are from a neon sign here and there at night or the Chinese New Year decor.

I suspect the Forbidden City looks OK from about 10 meters but it gets worse as you get closer like a bad tattoo when you look at it for longer.
