Content

So YouTube's been spamming me for what feels like weeks with notifications and pop-ups stating it has changed its terms of service. I didn't really think much of it. These online services change their ToS all the time these days. I find it honestly exhausting to try reading through their legaleze to make any attempt to actual fathom what it means to me.

But I finally decided to take a look the other day. I didn't really think anything of it. I didn't read the whole thing, because it was simply far too long. I did take a quick look though, and read about the first third of it, to see if there was anything that stood out to me as drastically changed. I didn't find anything.

Then my good friend mister--rendering asked me today on DeviantArt if I had read it, and how I felt about the ban on fetish content.

"Wait... wut?"

So I went back and read it again, going to the part that was specifically about sexually explicit content. I am not sure if this has changed, or if this was always the wording, but this is what it says now:

"Explicit content meant to be sexually gratifying (like pornography) is not allowed on YouTube. Videos containing fetish content will be removed or age-restricted. In most cases, violent, graphic, or humiliating fetishes are not allowed on YouTube."

Ok, that doesn't sound very different or too bad to me. I age-restrict all of my own content just based on the nature of what I produce. So I would think that anything I post would be mostly fine. I would expect them to age-restrict it, not to totally remove it even though that states it is an option.

However, then I kept reading...

"If you're posting content

Don’t post content on YouTube if it has any of the items below.

  • Depiction of genitals, breasts, or buttocks (clothed or unclothed) for the purpose of sexual gratification
  • Pornography depicting sexual acts, genitals, or fetishes for the purpose of sexual gratification"

Emphasis mine on the bolded part of that text.

Now I get a little emotional about this stuff, so I am probably over-reacting, but are you seriously telling me Google and YouTube that you can't handle a bikini model? I mean that is what that says with a literal translation. That a bikini model, say from a fitness competition or similar event, is not allowed to post on YouTube.

I know, I know. I'm taking an extreme view here. I'm sure the bikini model is not intentionally trying to be "sexually gratifying". However, she certainly is to some people.

I mean seriously, have we grown so mamby-pampy and weak as a society that we can't even handle looking at a beautiful woman proudly showing off her breasts in tight clothing? I mean we're talking about covered breasts here!

What's next? Are google trucks going to start visiting beaches to provide towels to ladies, forcing them to cover up?

Sorry, I'm sick, disgusted, disappointed, and offended. I am sure I'm over-reacting, but I am just so tired of this ridiculousness - this censorship. I honestly hope that all of YouTube and Goggle go bankrupt from this bullshit.

Even though I am sure this won't even be a hiccup to them.
