Just as when the T-62s were deployed in June 2022, Russian insisted they would be used only as short range artillery pieces in pillboxes, the same claim is being made about the T-54/55B.

The cope cage to protect (theoretically) from ATGM tells a different story.

Given that there are no sensors on that monstrosity over the turret (unless maybe there is a commander standing on top of it with binoculars?) wouldn’t that make the tank insanely visible while cresting over a hill well before the ability to detect or shoot back kicks in when the sight or cannon clears the crest?

Likely incredibly hot in that old thing. Need to keep the hatches open to ventilate; top covers are possibly a counter measure for drone delivered explosives.
