When the liberating army arrived, the villagers told them of the Gestapo and the Waffen SS. In the basement of one of the houses they told their liberators, they could hear screams night and day. On the edge of the forest, gunshots would be heard. Townspeople would disappear and never be seen again. A few POWs were taken there too.

The soldiers went to the house and found some prisoners still locked in dark rooms. They found the implements of torture, the evidence of the brutality. People took them to the site of the mass grave. They said the smell was horrible.

Later in the recent excavation, they found dental work from those who had been tortured and executed. Bridges and crowns. Removed to inflict pain.

I wish I could tell you this story was from 1942. I wish I could tell you this was the Waffen SS and that since 1998, there hasn't been an organized genocide on the European continent. I wish I could tell you that these were found buried in the ground, not in a plastic bucket as trophies.

But this wasn't 1942.

It was 2022.

Those are the dental implants, crowns, and bridges ripped out of victims' heads. Villagers in Pisky-Rad'kivs'ki told the Ukrainian troops of a house where screams would come from day and night. In the basement, they told them. They found that bucket of dental implants. They told them who the Russian soldiers were and the collaborators in town. They took them to the mass grave.

This is Ukraine.

This is 2022.

This is the truth.

The truth matters.

These people mattered.

There needs to be justice.
