Going to be a long day for us. NASA FIRMS is making it appear that Yampil' was overrun. We're not seeing anything to indicate beyond the usual Pro-Russian accounts repeating the same claims from days ago. The war maps were updated about 30 minutes ago and didn't show a change in the line of contact.

One thing is for sure, there was significant fighting in Yampil'.

Major fighting today in Krymky. This settlement was under Russian control, so I don't know if this was a Ukrainian counteroffensive or an attempt to push south by Russian forces. We see pics and videos of captured Russian artillery positions with ammo, indicating a fast retreat happened - somewhere. Ukrainian OPSEC is much better than Russian. It is harder to geolocate the content so we don't know where this is. If Russians got pushed back from Krymky that's a pretty big deal.

Rubizhne and Popasna were "quieter" today with no signs of significant artillery fire. We saw a lot of reports indicating yesterday's Russian/Chechen offensive in Rubizhne was a borderline disaster for their forces.

Both sides are suffering very heavy losses of men and equipment. The fighting south of Izyum and around Severodonetsk hasn't been seen in Europe since World War II.

Question: Is the actual map updating or just the location of the red squares?

This is the NASA FIRMS Global Fire Data map. It shows large fires and hot spots. The maps aren't perfect, the sun reflecting off of the water for example can sometimes create false positives. The map and satellites were created to track wildfires but they have become a valuable tool in tracking fighting. There are a lot of ways to slice the data. This is the simple view, so the red and the orange indicate which satellite network detected the fires. Orange and red together generally rule out false positives. All of these were in the past 24 hours and more than 12 hours ago - so this heavy fighting was overnight (Seattle time). It is one of our tools and resources for visualizing where fighting is happening, particularly showing airstrikes and artillery attacks.
