I love self-checkout when I am by myself as long as I don't have too much produce. I rarely need assistance. But I think the key is to understand that you can't and shouldn't be trying to buy too much in self-checkout. The more you try to buy the more likely you are to run into issues. My wife and I usually do the weekly "big" grocery trip together, and our Fred Meyer has a self-checkout with a conveyor belt. Looks kind of like a non-self-checkout that has been lowered, turned around, and had the worker station taken out. My wife does the scanning and paying end and I do the bagging end. My groceries are always bagged the way I like. We usually only have to have someone come over if using a coupon. Otherwise, it's great. It's fast. The line is, so far, never longer than the person already using the machine. We did have an issue where the scale under the price scanner and the scale under the conveyor belt were having a disagreement about some bananas once (it's almost always produced) and the attendant could not override it either. But otherwise, we think it's great.
