How has cloud computing, data centers and generative AI increased the demand for fossil fuel energy instead of reducing it? Chicago’s Human Computer Integration Lab demonstrated a way to give you haptic feedback in VR without anything on the front of your hand. IDC reports that smart phone sales fell 1.6% on the year. That's the 7th straight quarter that smartphones sales have fallen year over year.

Molly has a great point in data center energy usage, but as someone that works in and with many data center companies - they are always evolving to increase their efficiency because it's literally their profit margin. The more efficient they are - the more money they can make. Likewise, evolution of the energy consumers in the data center are evolving. We're on the precipice of servers requiring water cooling in the racks. The Intel processors consume so much energy, they aren't able to stay cool enough with air alone - but those CPUs can do more than a few severs one or two generations ago. Also we're seeing ARM based servers showing up in masse to take over the workloads that other more power hungry servers used to take. Think of the what we saw with switching from Intel to M1 on our Macs... I get two days of battery life with the same use that my previous Intel could claim 3 hours. Long post, but it underscores how much I love hearing you all having intelligent discussions on things that many don't consider. Keep up the great work.

And don't get me started on GPUs... :P
