On the topic of people attributing intelligence to large language models, I think it's something much more primal: humans anthropomorphize everything! We talk to our cars and our kitchen appliances. We talk differently to the office printer that always jams than we do to the one that always runs smoothly. Just last week, my dad suggested I do some cosmetic maintenance on my car, and I told him I couldn't do that, because then the car would know I plan to keep it, and I want it to be scared that I could get rid of it any day now, otherwise it might acting up. The least realistic part of the amazing Murderbot Diaries Series is the idea that people wouldn't treat a humanoid construct like a person. We talk about our plants like they're people; we absolutely would talk to a SecUnit like a person, even if we didn't expect a response!

Currently “reading” that series - insightful comments; I always believed that my car seemed to run better when freshly washed!
