DTNS Proper starts at 11:20

We talk about Wi-Fi audio distortion and a whiny car and why Roger can't eat during movies. Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO mentioned in an investor relations call that the PlayStation 4 was entering the final phase of its life cycle. Cryptic words to be sure but what does this mean for the PlayStation console and does it signal a shift from gaming as a product to a gaming as service for the company?

The PlayStation comment is not cryptic at all for anyone that pays attention to the industry and is not in a given camp. Sorry Patric, I have listened to your show and you are clearly a PlayStation guy. lol At present the Xbox One X is significantly more powerful than the PS4 Pro. (<a href="https://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/xbox-one-x-vs-ps4-pro/)" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/xbox-one-x-vs-ps4-pro/)</a> The idea that they are going to "crouch down so that we can jump higher in the future" simply means they are not going to try and match the current Xbox One X but are going to wait three years for the next generation of consoles. I expect that both Microsoft and Sony will have new systems at that time. Three years from now is not too soon for a new Xbox and I would not be totally surprised if Microsoft simply made an even more powerful version of the current console. The idea of a completely new architecture and hence a new console with a new OS in no longer necessary with the current generation. I expect they will continue to upgrade the OS as they go much like they are now doing with Windows 10 and simply introduce new hardware every 4-5 years. Sony knows that their exclusives will keep the majority of gamers in their camp and that most cross platform games will not take full advantage of the Xbox's better hardware. To make a new PS4 now would be a panic move and they can afford to "crouch" for a few years.

I don't disagree with you on most of this. The Xbox One X may be more powerful than the PS4 but it's also limited by the fact that developers need to make their games work on the older models as well. The smart play for Microsoft feels like it would be to double down on their cross platform design for PC, Tablet, Phone, TV, and VR so that developers can reach a wider audience and hardware manufacturers can continue to do incremental upgrades without slowing things down by generation. Right now Sony's Playstation platform is a media powerhouse and a solid VR value option. If they were to introduce a more affordable internet based hardware solution, a premium console option, and a beefier VR upgrade they could solidify their console market lead for a long time especially with a strong exclusive content lineup that encumpases their large back catalog that they already have. We can't underestimate the games library which, let's be honest, is a huge part of what keeps Nintendo alive.
