January 2018 DTNS Update (Patreon)
Content
THIS is the DTNS Monthly Update available to all backers. Each month I let you know what's going on at DTNS and highlight a few awesome patrons in the audience.
TOM'S NOTE
CES is dominating our discussions as we head into 2018. For the first time, DTNS will stream from the CES show floor. Last year, I did the show in Las Vegas from a hotel room, but this year we want to see if we get a boost from having the show all around us.
A little side note on this. My belief is that you can cover CES more effectively if you're not actually there. At least for a show like DTNS you can. The short version of my explanation is that most of our show prep is looking at what's news and then deciding what to discuss. We then put it in context, help you understand it and send you to the folks doing the original reporting if you want to learn more. You don't need to be at a show to do that.
So this will be a test to see if there are any other benefits to being at the show. One will be guests. Getting people to stream from CES is often troublesome because of bandwidth. Our guests this year (like last year) will all be in person. Plus Sarah, Roger and I will all be there. This costs a bit of course but it has the added benefit of not having to bring anyone in on the stream. All we have to worry about is recording the show first, then streaming it out live second. That makes some things easier IF we have good bandwidth.
We're also going to try doing some Facebook Live streams. We're using Facebook Live because it's easy to do from a phone and has nice chat integration and a lot of the audience is there. If this works and we do it again we may or may not pick another platform. But the idea is to stream during the evening press events (CES Unveiled, Digital Experience and Show Stoppers) to give you the more informal behind the scenes feel of the show.
So yeah CES is dominating our thoughts. BUT we also have more plans for the rest of the month including taking into account all the great feedback we got from the survey! Turns out 92 percent of you like the bonus Labs content being in the main feed. So that will be staying. 70 percent of you don't watch live which is actually a little lower than it used to be. I've been experimenting with simulcasting the stream on Twitch (at http://twitch.tv/acedtect) so we can have more options for you. Keep in mind this will probably not happen during CES, but I'll be back to playing with it once we return.
And if you didn't catch us discussing it elsewhere, Sarah will have her own DTNS Labs effort starting by the end of the month focusing on your feedback! So keep an eye out for that.
As DTNS begins its FIFTH year I cannot express how much I appreciate each and every one of you for believing in this show and supporting it so much. Here's to an even better 2018!
PATRON TOTALS FOR DECEMBER
Yeah our goal of getting at least one more patron than the month before took a hit with Patreon's brief decision to change fees, then changing it back. We're down 130 patrons over last month. Soooooo- let's just recalibrate and shoot for at least one more patron NEXT month!
