Zelazny's "Doorways in the Sand" is one of my all-time favorite stand-alone books. It's a crime mystery where a priceless alien artifact has gone missing and everyone thinks the protagonist -- Fred -- stole it, but he has NO clue why people would think that. Fred's been in undergraduate college for 13 years because his uncle left him a comfortable stipend while he was a student that would be cut off if he graduated, so he has made sure not to graduate by always stopping one credit short of his degree requirements and switching majors. (He's an all-A student though. In, like, everything.) His incredibly frustrated Dean keeps trying to trick him into graduating. And the "Unicorn Variations" short story is also amazing: charming, whimsical, and thoughtful.
