It's been a while since I've read King Solomons Mines, but from what I recall Allan Quartermaine was like... literally Just Some Guy. He was a fairly good hunter, and had a sense of adventure, but there's nothing at all supernatural, he's not even that exceptional by normal human standards. He does go through absolute hell during the story, and it's impressive that he survives, and with his mental health somewhat okay even, but then he just retires with his diamond money. He's cool, but at least to me not nearly as intriguing as the other characters they drew on. The appeal, at least to me, is in the adventure, the lost civilisation and ancient mysteries, rather than the characters themselves.

Speaking as somebody who grew up in a Mark Twain loving household - Tom Sawyer is not accurate at all. The book's Sawyer is a COMPLETE WANKER.
