Behold, the pilot episode of my latest attempt at a Cast of Pod. With stunning visuals exclusively for Patrons.

My friend, editor and podcast guru Sophia joins me to talk about the first Michael Crichton novel I've read that isn't about humanity killing itself by playing god.

I wonder how much Michael Crichton had followed the 1973 occupation of Wounded Knee (symbolically chosen because it had been the site of the 1890 massacre) and wanted to draw the American public's attention to the ongoing role of their government's violent and deadly repression of the Oglala and other nations? Whether U.S. Army or U.S. Marshalls, killing 300 (mostly women and children) or sniping only a few, but very influential people, that we really are the bad guys here. I wonder if he didn't publish it because he wasn't sure he'd got it right?

The Narrator

Nice podcast. Looking forward to hearing more. Unfortunately, I have some bad news about Michael Crichton. He wrote a book that famously said some pretty racist things about Japanese people called "Rising Sun" (and also threw a tantrum when they cast a black actor instead of a white one in the lead role in the film adaptation), and was also a climate change denier.
