Interesting, I had completely forgotten/missed any direct misogyny when I read this as a teenager. I guess it just came across as snarky dialogue by characters whose default setting was snark. Plus, I felt so sympathetic for Sybill, I suppose I saw her as an obvious counterpoint to 'all women are dreadful, lol'. Would be interesting to go back and reread it now.

I have one horrific experience regarding this book - I went to a bookstore to buy it in English (not a native speaker, you see), and asked an attendant where I could find it in the huge store. She looked at me with quite an empty expression and asked me "That's by Dickens, right?" Needless to say I took the book and ran for the hills, never visiting the store again. 🙄
