I would say a kid in the late 50s/early 60s would have his shirt partly tucked in and partly out - his mom would've forced him to tuck it in but it would be pulled out during playing or just him being a rebellious little punk.

Good review and it's a pity they didn't hold true to the novel. Also I'm with you, I didn't notice how prominent rape is used as a trope until you mentioned it. Good grief. Also bad adaptation! Shame on you for taking a good character engaged chickification of her. For shame and I am annoyed this seems to be a thing.

Robert Mitchum has a scary ass performance in this movie, just that "There is something wrong with this guy, but I can't quite put my finger on it." kinda thing, then he switches to full on monster. Though he was way scarier in Night of the Hunter.
