On the note of how smart Raccoons are. They're actually apex animals. They are omnivores without anything that kills them in great enough numbers to be considered a predator to them. They die to things like foxes, wolves and bears, but not in any great enough number for them to be considered the prey to any species. This is because they are observant and smart enough not to put them into situations where they are in any significant danger. Even today, the leading cause of death for them are cars driving at night, and not in significant enough numbers to put their population in danger. The only reason they are overpopulating everything is that they typically only have one or two children at a time. They are good at socializing with other Raccoons and have been observed socializing with other animals. They have fully functional hands with thumbs. They basically have all the traits needed for them to be considered one of the species most likely to replace our civilization if humans ever wipe themselves out.
