I've come across some patreons who actually opens for commissions for patreons only and are publicly closed, which I'm not sure what to feel about because I really don't want to limit myself and separate myself from my fanbase, so I'd like to hear your opinions on this...

1. Open for commissions for Patreons only (with a discount of the amount of what patreons are currently supporting with, for example, a full commission would be $100, but if you support $5 or $10, it'll be taken off the commission price so it'll either be $95 or $90 USD.

2. Open for commissions for Patreons only, but if slots aren't filled, the rest of the slots goes publicly, same discount thing with Patreons only.

Could always alternate around and sometimes open for just patrons, and sometimes be fully public depending on how you're feeling! No need to really restrict yourself in the future

I'd say have 1 of your 3 slots open for patrons first, then open it publicly if it doesn't fill, which it probably would. Not sure what to think of discounting it though.

I think Patreon-first rather than Patreon-only would be better. People already see Patreon as a paywall, so limiting commissions to only Patreon people would likely drive more people away.

Personally I’ll never have the money to afford getting something commissioned it doesn’t matter who it is 100$ USD is too much when you only have 100$ Canadian to spend a week after paying bills and rent and gas and insurance and all the bull of living. Though I would have to say that depending on how many slots you have for commissions make some of them for patrons and then the rest to public. I don’t know how many slots you have, but let’s say you have five, make two of them Patreon slots and the other three public. And if you don’t get the two Patreon slots filled you open them to the public. Also I wouldn’t make there be a discount for Patrons I’m here to support you with what i give per month if I could ever afford a 100$ USD commission off of my paycheck I wouldn’t have a problem giving a 100$ for that commission and not getting a 10$ discount. That’s just how I would do it if it were up to me.

dont do patreon only, doubt that will do you anything good in the longterm but prioritize patreons over non patreons in a way when dealing with commission will be better. could possible do it like you open your que a few days before on fa for example. and idk about discounting though, it would be like another incentive to be a patreon to you aswell. i dont know if the time one has been a supporter should matter but it maybe is something to consider ?

Would rather the commissions stay public

Otterbutter

When you're building your commissions queue, reserve every third or so spot for patrons. Public > public > patron > public, etc. If it doesn't get filled by a patron, move on to the next public commission.

Duster

Opening commission slots early for patrons and then filling the rest with public if they don't get filled seems perfectly Fair. Maybe if one session of commissions are completely filled with patrons the next one could be completely open to the public, to make sure that commissions aren't completely snatched up by patrons every time.

As the others already mentions you shouldn't make your commissions patreon only. If you keep them open the word about your are will spread further and might attract more patreons instead of scaring them away with more contend behind a paywall. If you want to priorize patrons make it maybe 2 out of 10 slots (i don't know how much you open normally), or if you are planning something special, like a animation, let us maybe know it sooner than on FA.

I Think you should go with the first option, it seems a lot more fair for everyone

letodoesart

I wouldn't hide my creations behind a paywall, like finished commissions would be posted publicly, and I'm only accepting 3 commissions a week to avoid backlog, but since my patreons support me, I should priorize you all before the rest of the public, without you guys I wouldn't have been able to come this far! <3

How about I do 2 weeks of Patreon commissions (6 total, 3 per week) Then I open for public commissions for 1 week then back to patreon?

I kind of agree with Chipper's idea, but at which point do you decide that there's no commission from patreons (right on Tuesday evening for example? Before you start to work? Sorry, I don't know your schedule good enough for that xD) The little discount seems fair to me and would be a neat, kind thing to do But overall I don't feel like it's neccessary to give those kind of benefits towards patreon supporters, since we don't (okay, most of us, surely there are some people and it's nothing wrong with that) support you to get benefits but to - as the name says - support you because we'd like helping you develop your art skills more, because we like your characteristics... insert X reason here. For me it's like giving you some kind of tip for your great work and I really don't expect other benefits from that; like a cheaper bill next time(like giving service a tip for good work) Something that I would personally appreciate more: Maybe throw out some free sketches from time to time, especially for the low-paying patreons. More than enough people out there would surely love to support you or buy a commission but really ain't having the money for it. But they are able to throw in a $/€ or two and do something good by that. Like ummm "Hey guys, totally in mood for drawing some person jumping ina pile of leaves! Ya interested?!" and pick a random patreon - it could be "just" (?) once or twice a month when you do warmups People who pay you more /most likely/ are or would be able to buy a commission whether or not it's 5-10$/€ less. But they aren't aiming for that Maybe it's too much work, maybe it's unfair (which it may is in a certain way) But it's all about spreading the love, isn't it? Probably people would exploit it, but that's happening anyway with pretty much everything :P Whelp, those are my two cents. Hope y'all ain't killing me :P /Edit: (Sorry for making that so long, really x.x) I feel like a good role model there would be paco, too. Giving out a sketch/else each anniversary. Those sketches for like anniversarys are a perfect thing. Why? Well, usually people being active here & stuff want to be recognized by you. And hell yeah, you do that - but I think some personal memory which you can look back at being like "wow, he drew that because I'm so long within his community! It's not (directly :P) because I pay him or because he had to or anything else; it's because /he knows me/, he appreciates me and g ives me this memory for that Probably that's why atleast for me, paco panda is with if not the best artist I know. He gives this feeling of being not just "a" part but THE part of the community - and you feel that a lot when talking with him because he remembers conversations lot Idk, don't wanna say other's don't do that, but it's pretty remarkable for me. Not meant to be rant or anything, maybe I'm drifting off, therefore sorry. But probably it's giving some thought ideas for more ideas... :P TL;DR : Doing your patreons something good? How bout make more personal, individualised stuff (anniversary gifts, more luuuvely streams with those fun interactions [could be that I'm just always missing them -_- my fault :P]...)

What if you just reserved a few slots for patreons? Say if you have 5 slots open then one would be strictly reserved for a patreon. I'm here to support you as an artist because I like what you do, not for preferential treatment. <3

Sebastian Gwinne

I think the Patrons-only idea works if you have a considerable following to pool from. It might be one of those ways to encourage more patronage, but I think I would only offer open commission slots to Patrons first if you were to do something like that. I wouldn’t get too exclusive.

Anonymous

I think what would be interesting to do is have priority slots, like let's say 1 a month for patrons of a certain tier, to encourage people to become patrons. But I'm also saying this selfishly because I want to commission you.

Anonymous

I’ve seen several other artists offer slots on their Patreon a day or two before they offer them generally. It’s not unusual if you want to do that.
