As she flailed helplessly, Amanda grew tired and began to feel sick and dizzy. With growing panic she realized that she was not going to escape. She let out a desperate, muffled cry – pleading in tone. Her attacker responded, whispering in her ear:

“Shhhh! Shhhhh! Just go to sleep….”

Amanda tried not to breathe in any more of the fumes as she clawed at the hand across her face. But her numb fingers lacked the strength to pull it off. Her arms were heavy. She suddenly felt very sleepy.

Behind her, Dr Lafarge waited patiently as Amanda’s struggles became weaker. When the girl’s arms dropped by her sides, he craned forward and turned her face to him, keeping the pad over her mouth and nose. Her fluttering eyes looked up in brief confusion: then, after one last deep inhalation, they rolled back into their sockets.
