(Note: new 0.36.3 on the blog. Not important unless you want to get Altina back in the party without replaying anything - added a fixer event - but it has some minor fixes and improvements.)

Over the past week of bugfixes would have been a perfect time to work a lot on side projects, but I've been struggling with motivation due to some issues. I only really feel like doing two things:
1) Finishing the Stenai update.
2) Writing.

Nobody will object to the first, and work on TLS 0.37.0 is underway. The second is a bit more unusual. I don't mean write dialogue or some short one-off; I've been really missing prose and larger writing structures like novels. That has been true for a while, actually, but it was doubly the case recently.

So I wrote some stuff, actually a significant chunk of text overall. I want to stress that this writing wasn't coming at the expense of TLS progress - it was a choice between accomplishing a little and feeling lousy overall, or accomplishing a little and also writing. Definitely helped pull me through some things.

Not sure how to feel about it, though. My policy for myself was that I wouldn't launch into any large writing project until I finished TLS, only self-contained side projects. I still feel like that's a good idea, and I know a fair number of people don't care about my prose, so maybe this one will have to be shelved for a long time.

I enjoy writing in general, but games and novels are my two enduring loves. After TLS is complete, I may indulge my desire to do some of the latter. If you would be interested in a novel from me, say as much, but don't worry: I won't let myself get sidetracked with anything until I've completed the core project most of you are here to see.

Next week I will hopefully be back to say I've shaken things off and made major progress on TLS 0.37.0. It's a fun update I really want to bring to everyone, I just need to make maps and get through some of the less fun parts of game creation first.

Would your writing be set within someone else's established universe or one of your own creation? Either way, I'd be at least interested. Your writing is why I like your games.

sierralee

Oh, definitely something of my creation. I might do occasional fanfiction in the future, but overall I'm not interested in working within established universes.

Desertopa

At the very least, if you wrote a novel, I'd be interested in checking it out. Lately, I've had a hard time finding novels I find really satisfying, and if it's in the field of fantasy, I don't think there are that many people out there who're as good at compelling plots, settings and characters. But, I have to admit that some of my favorite elements of TLS are things that couldn't really be replicated in pure prose. I think that the way you handle interactions between the narrative and medium in your games is among the elements that makes them genuinely great, rather than simply good.

sierralee

Yes, I suspect that many feel the same way. Thanks for your honest reaction and the kind words.

Chex

I'd definitely be interested in reading any of your stuff. That's the main reason why I play TLS

Edward Culham

About the event that adds Altina back in your party. Will you be adding something like that for the people that are in the waiting room that at the beginning it will fix that?

Lord Forte

I think my personal degree of interest would depend heavily on the genre. I enjoy your writing, but I know you've expressed before that you aren't really that big on high fantasy worlds (or at least certain aspects of them). Since my own interest is mainly in that kind of world, while I would probably enjoy anything you wrote to some extent just for skill, I'd probably not really ultimately not have that much interest in, say, modern fantasy. If it turned out to be a genre I liked, I'd definitely be interested though.

NomiNomi

I'd be interested.

As a casual writer that has read your dialog, i would be interesting in the sort of world/dimention that develops out in a novel. your concept of Magic and connection to sex is interesting and sets a base for the games combat system, but it also expands on several types of magic often left untouched with the rare exception and even some of those are not very good adeptations. If you were to write a book, you would be essentially bringing a good adeptation to a new world. even if you didnt include magic, you seem to enjoy a story's social aspects too that i find very simular to stormcaller or Robin Hobb's works. My opinion. please write a book. id love to read it :)

SantaTheHutt

Honestly, I play TLS so I can read (and take some small part in) your story. You've got a talent for character writing and development that some (most?) professional novelists never seem to pick up. I mean, who could write a serious, compelling narrative story involving a central character who calls herself "Cumdump" without resorting to turning her into comic relief or trivializing her experience? Not many, I'd venture. If you wrote a novel, I'd be first in line to buy it.

sierralee

You mean the waiting room for 0.37.0? Yeah, the event moving on from there will check for Altina.

sierralee

Have I given the impression that I don't like high fantasy? D= I may have come across that way by talking about how I don't like generic fantasy worlds, but I enjoy the genre a great deal. While I probably have urban fantasy stories in me, secondary worlds will always be my main genre and that's what I've felt like writing over the past week.

Dubsington

The way I'm seeing it, I'm supporting Sierra Lee the creator, not buying a license to the game TLS. Certainly one of the reasons I support you is because I love the game, but I don't feel like you need to justify working on projects not directly related to your main offerings. (If you said "I am delivering no TLS content for the next few months" I might feel differently of course, but writers, like any other artist, aren't machines (nor even technicians). Do your thing and stay sane. The worst thing that can happen from all our perspectives is if you were to get burned out!

DukeLeto7

I'd be the last person who could condemn taking personal time. Do what keeps you going. :)

Runcible Technician

Everything I've read by you has been golden. I may love your games, but I would absolutely buy your novels.

Secular Reason

Finally got some time to play. That was a lot to take in, from where we got the new shard to the war with the Fucklord. I'm pausing there, mostly because big war events have me replaying to test options and I don't have time to do that now. So: Not too surprised about the Anak, but the Hermit was a nice touch. Especially how the rock monuments in her room stood for the types of power. 1 arcane, 1 sexual, 1 divine and one... corruption? I'm not certain now what the fourth was, although I was certain when I played. Hmm. Odd that I can't quite remember any fourth power... but still, the subtle touch there was appreciated. It showed how the hermit was indeed studying all the powers they knew of. Hmm. Maybe that fourth power is demonic? I mean if there is divine power and the tower goes both ways? Now I need to look back at that segment to try and recall what I thought that fourth power was. I also like how the Tower seemed to hint that some of those items in the "Holy" area could have been of reminiscent of long dead gods, or maybe gods that were yet to be, or perhaps just ones unknown to the world at large. Lots of ambiguous imagery - leading to many possibilities but no certainties, not yet anyway. I do like a good metaphysical mystery. Then there was the little bit where places in the real world had colors in the Tower that matched the hair colors their locals get. Green for Yhilin for example. Makes me wonder if the color is just there because people identify green with Yhilin, or if the colors have a deeper significance. Never can be sure with you. Seriously Sierra, you are the only creator I can reliably come to for this kind of "deep" stuff in a game. Especially a porn game lol! Take your time, do what you gotta - I'll be ready and waiting for more when you return. This kind of game is my drug. It's why I liked Ouroboros so much. I crave mindfuckery. Keep delivering it and you'll have a Patron forever. The point is - TLS is what I have long dreamed of, a game that has adult content, but I'm not playing it FOR the adult content. It's just an additional detail instead of a goal. Desecration of Wings was like that too - but the shortness of the game made the lore flow too fast for it to compare with TLS unfortunately. Still good, but not truly great like this one is - though it could have been had you made it more expansive which would have allowed for a slower pacing. But yeah, basically this is a giant wankfest review of TLS XD. I still am dying to know about the "nice, perfectly normal girl" of course. Just as you knew I would be. I have... suspicions. But they're wild guesses at the moment. You've been wonderfully close-mouthed on her, so I've even resisted checking in the game files for clues, just because I'm enjoying the mystery. Oh, and just as an aside? Orilise has jumped WAY up in my personal order of harem favorites with how she took advantage of that Chosen. Help the poor elf woman indeed. God damn, she's like... right behind Yarra, and that's only because Yarra is Yarra. Unbiasedly best succubus. If not for that I'd have to admit that Orilise was ahead. Lastly, was that line the Chosen gave the fucklord "Who do you serve? Justice!" Inspired by this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrANMLzM6aY Probably not, but it brought it to mind, immediately. Oh, and back to TLS? I'm still holding out hope that we can convince Esthera to live, grant her a different type of shard to replace her Lustlord one, and take the one she has for ourselves in the process.

Bladestorm

I will be honest love your games and the storytelling so I would probably enjoy your novels but I am more of a gamer than reader nowadays.

Miragian

I'm very curious about what you might write, independent of TLS

Lamsey

I'd be interested in some long-form writing from you. As previously mentioned by Dubsington, the whole point of Patreonage is to support you as a creator, not just a transaction for a single game. If writing novels is something you want to get into, I'm all for it. At least then I wouldn't have to worry about covering all the different branches when typo hunting :-P When the completion of TLS finally comes, it'd be good if you'd already had the chance to explore avenues for your next major project, rather than having to start from a blank sheet of pixels. There are many interesting worlds in your brain, as if each synapse has enfolded in it a universe. Go explore them!

Aria

I'll Be honest, the main reason I stuck with TLS Wasn't the lewd scenes. It was mainly about the world building and writing style within the game. I'd really love to see what you could do outside of the confinements of RPG Maker for a larger story based game or novels. (The shadow-run / balders gate / Divinity Games come to mind as examples) I understand that those are larger projects as far as the game design goes. Have you ever thought of putting together a team for game design itself with you as the lead game designer/director and writer? What I mean by that is leaving the other team members to design levels and code events ect while you focus on world building, story telling, and character development. From what I've seen that's where your passions lie. The main reasoning I mentioned being the director is to have an overview of the project to ensure those working along side you are on the same page.

sierralee

Glad you got a chance to play again and enjoyed things! No comment on your plot speculations, but it's nice to read them. ^-^ >I crave mindfuckery. Haha, I actually have a WIP I poke at occasionally with the temporary title "Mindfuckery." Not sure if it will ever come together, but I hope it will eventually. >Lastly, was that line the Chosen gave the fucklord "Who do you serve? Justice!" Inspired by this? Just inspired by the same spirit of cheesy heroism.

sierralee

Yeah, there are a lot of potential paths after TLS that are increasingly cohering in my mind. When it gets closer to finished will be an interesting time to be a patron. I'll likely talk about an interim/breather project to follow, then the longer possibilities beyond.

sierralee

I've certainly thought about it, but putting together a team is hard since it's difficult to find others who are professional and passionate about the same things. Also expensive, though the longer everyone keeps supporting me, the higher I can potentially aim.

Anonymous

If you wrote a book with the same level of detail and care that you put into your other projects, I'd definitely be interested in it. Especially one that does such incredible world-building like TLS does.

Wildeyes

I remember reading your short story collection all set in a town that was full of the supernatural. I loved those stories, so I know that a novel from your mind would be something special.

sierralee

Oh, that's nice to hear - I get very few comments about that set. Maybe not my most inspired collection, but I really liked some of those stories.

Anonymous

Loved playing TLS and had to throw in a support for you, now if only I could figure out some of the other items in the game heh.

sierralee

Thank you for your support! If you're looking to figure out more about the game, do consider checking in with fans on the wiki!

Quiet Stranger

I am a big fan of your stories and I would be happy to sponsor your literature whenever the mood strikes you. Although you achieve more of your potential through the interactive depth of a video game, it's the writing that pulls me in even there.
