The time has come... we need to talk about the end of TLS. No, it's not imminent. But with this post I'm going to speak directly about some topics that I've avoided in the past, like the total number of chapters.

TECHNICAL SPOILERS: I won't really be revealing plot details in this post, but I will be talking about the structure of the entire game. If you really don't want to know anything like that, you can skip this one.

Total Chapters

Those of you who have been with the game for a long time will remember that I didn't reveal the first chapter title until the whole thing was finished. This was because, in a sea of unfinished games, I didn't want to seem like I was overreaching. But I've had the title cards for all the chapters finished ever since the fourth update of the game, just sitting on my hard drive.

I also didn't want to state the number of chapters because that would make some elements of the plot too obvious. For example, players who knew there were more than three chapters wouldn't have been surprised when the scope of the game expanded beyond the original Incubus King. But I've known that I couldn't remain coy about this detail forever, and I don't want anyone to think the story is being strung along forever, so at this point I'll just reveal the total number of chapters.

Five. With the previous update, I revealed the fourth chapter title. It will not be any huge spoiler to reveal the title of the fifth: Sovereign.

There is also a "The End" card done in the same style. Because when we reach the end of my plans, TLS will end. It will be a definitive ending that I hope everyone will find satisfying.

So, you may be wondering, what percentage of the game is done so far? That's difficult to say with precision, because the chapters are not all the same size. My plan was for the third chapter to be the longest in terms of linear plot, so we are past 60% finished. Certain things will slow down in the fourth and fifth chapters, though, due to the way the game is structured. Some details:

Chapter Four: Arbiter
After a time skip in which the characters rebuild and their research progresses, chapter four will start with the global political scene becoming more active again. You'll be working on a larger number of countries from a higher vantage point than before.

You'll be able to have an impact on many nations, the new ones you just founded as well as those you already know. Expect to be able to travel more freely than in past updates. Though you'll still have a chance to improve Yhilin, including funding some things you might have skipped before, you won't be managing it in such fine detail.

During the fourth chapter, the scale will expand beyond just politics. You'll start to get answers to some of the game's central mysteries and take a major role on the world stage. This should be a substantial chapter that will set the stage for...

Chapter Five: Sovereign
The final chapter will be divided into two segments. First will be a section of the plot similar to the rest of the game, and I won't say much about that. Second, the world will finally open up completely, an official endgame stage in which you'll get a final chance to prepare for the end of the game. I'm most uncertain about the length of this stage, since it will involve a lot of optional loose ends.

Final Content
The end of chapter five isn't the end of the game, though, there are three other pieces:

 - Expect a large optional dungeon at the end that is even more difficult than the official final dungeon. I intend to design this one to be a challenge for those who have been minmaxing through the entire game.

 - After chapter five, there will be a short epilogue sequence paralleling the prologue at the beginning. This will be the true ending.

 - Finally, there will be an open-ended postgame section in which you'll get to wander the world and see the results of your actions and choices. After you've been in this world for so long, I think you deserve some time to enjoy seeing what you've created with all your choices.

Planning Thoughts
Another question people may have: how close are we to my original schedule and plan for TLS? The answer... really fairly close.

Some things took longer than expected. I didn't anticipate that Stineford and Ardoheim would take two updates to do completely, but I feel they were better for taking the extra time. In my original schedule I thought that I could do the later Ari-Yhilina updates as simple add-ons to another update, which strikes me as naive in retrospect.

However, my schedule also included empty slots because I know how plots tend to expand. I planned three updates for the war, which I ended up doing in two (though the content was more like four). So all in all, we are pretty close to the version number I expected to reach by the end of chapter three.

The game is pretty close to my original vision in terms of the story. There are some things in the outline that I've changed and there are a number of sideplots and characters that blossomed into more than I expected. Big stories like this always grow in the telling.

This isn't my first time writing an epic, so I planned for this. My chapter four notes include flexibility and some open spaces to accommodate this process. And looking over everything I have planned for the rest, I feel satisfied that it's an appropriate amount of content. I'm really looking forward to working on the rest!

Break

Having said that, I need to take some time to feel like I've planned the rest of the game to the absolute best of my ability. That's one of the reasons I'll be taking another break, as I did after the end of the second chapter.

To be clear, this isn't a vacation for me. Just a chance to stretch myself creatively and refresh myself with less focused work after the pace of release after release. Last break, I created Ouroboros along with a number of stories and smaller concept games. This time, I have a lot of stuff in the works, so I guarantee you'll be getting a substantial amount of content from me. More than you'd normally expect in a month!

But I'll be making a post about that in more detail a little later. For now, I hope everyone enjoyed getting the outline for the rest of the game. Thanks to all of you for helping me come this far, and I hope to have you with me all the way to the conclusion and beyond. ^-^

I must say playing the releases got me hooked into the lore and story of this game. I just wondered what happens next and the surprises in finishing Chapter 4 and 5 By the way wedding scene made my heart warm, nice touch and writing over there

sierralee

Thanks! Always happy to hear from people who like the plot, or elements like the wedding. ^-^

NomiNomi

I hope you enjoy your break Sierra. The concepts for the future of TLS all sound really interesting and cool.

Anonymous

Skipped the main part of the post as I prefer to be in the dark ;) Looking forward to what your "break" brings us but that makes me ponder something...Please make sure you take a real break / vacation once in a while. I don't remember when the last time was but just because this is your full time job doesn't mean you should not have one.

ThatPatronDude

I don't have much to say except I love your work! You should definitely take a real break sooner or later tho. Can't wait!

Andrey Kulikov

Sounds like we should prepare ourselves for a ride! I'm excited :) I wish you best results in your work!

The more I read this post, the more I like it. What really brought me a smile was the part about the open-ended endgame. I missed this kind of stuff. It's even better in a game the player has such a large impact in the game world. On a side note... Since airships have already been established as existing in this world, and since you said the game "will finally open up completely"... Am I reading this right? Are we gonna get a global airship to explore at will, check out different places, look for hidden places, and all that good stuff?

sierralee

Sorry, but I don't think I have the resources to do airship exploration of the world in as satisfying of a way as I'd like for TLS. What I mean is that you'll be able to go to any location you've visited (and some new ones) at will instead of being restricted to the current one. I do intend for the locations to have new quests, new areas, and so on.

Lord Forte

Looks like I guessed the number of chapters right, yay. XD I think the most interesting part of this is hearing just how well you were able to plan out the schedule in advance, though. Even if it's not your first epic, that's still highly impressive! Of course, that's also not to say that the rest isn't fascinating as well. Much of it is along the lines of what I would've expected given the current flow of the narrative, but I think that's a good thing. I both anticipate and dread the kind of secrets there will be to find in a truly open segment though... Haha. And of course, the structure does very little to make me anticipate the actual revelations to come any less. On that note, let me take a moment to compliment the fact that you've made me interested in the metaphysical side of the plot instead of dread it. A lot of great games that I otherwise enjoy have a somewhat similar plot structure in terms of a political plot and a metaphysical plot, but in most of those cases, I sort of hate the metaphysical side because it feels like it's... much less compelling than the political side and it tends to take over the narrative (example: Final Fantasy Tactics. I love the political side of that game, but at the end it just gets totally sidelined for a pretty uninspired metaphysical plot). So, in general when I see a game I enjoy going this direction, I'm sad and afraid. But, in the case of TLS, the deeper mysteries feel both more intricately interwoven with the political side and more actually interesting. I -want- to find out what's going on there, and that isn't usually my reaction. Plus I trust your authorial ability to keep the story a coherent whole as we deal with the metaphysics. So thank you again for making such an excellent story! As far as the break goes, you definitely deserve one. I look forward to seeing whatever comes of it!

Well it is everything I hoped for specially the part where we can see the end results of our choices. Chapter 4 and 5 gets me excited since we can finally see the world or the continent at least still will it be open like free to travel right? when you're not tied up in the main story? Though it makes me sad we're nearing the end of the game.. Still looking forward to all the future updates.... I really love this work of yours. Hopefully you can finish it soon that's how bad I want it hahahaha. But I will wait... a game like this needs time to be polished and perfected the way you want it... I am just happy to join the ride in this great adventure you made... Oh yeah, wouldn't it be pretty cool if we could play Simon with a younger face? it doesn't have to be permanent of part of the plot. just a player skin or pixel alternative for an endgame bonus or new game plus? hahaha I would like to see him young for his harem.

EG Douglas

I am pleased we're going to address some of the larger aspects of your setting that we've seen the hints of. For a time, I was worried that the story 'would' end after taking down our personal Incubus King. Though the fact that I care so much is because your writing ability is so strong that not knowing what I'm sure you've already figured out would intrigue me to distraction. A break is no problem to me. Pacing yourself is responsible. Is it too early to say I'm really interested in what you might move to next?

sierralee

Thanks! I have a lot of thoughts about metaphysical plots - making them intriguing and intertwined with the rest of the game is important to me, so I hope everyone likes the eventual full revelations.

sierralee

Yes, you'll increasing have the ability to go back to any previous area. Not in the middle of plot events, of course, but expect regular access to all previous shops and the like. As for younger Simon, it probably can't be an alternative mode, but I do have a little something planned for it down the line. ^-^

sierralee

Glad you're invested in the story! =D I've definitely given some serious thought to what might follow TLS. But right now, the vast majority of my energy will be focused on finishing it and occasional side projects.

Anonymous

This is very impressive and satisfying to read, how you planned all this from the beginning. Also, it is kind of interesting that you decided to do such a big project as your first (if i am not mistaken) game.

Dubsington

I love the idea of a post game. That will give invested players a lot of closure.

Bladestorm

I must say after being with this game for a good year or so now I have been enjoying all the twist and turns and have loved the way the war had ended. Your writing and the story you have weaved has enraptured me in this world you have created, I ll be excited to see how this time skip will affect the world and the investments we have done, but like anything when this does end I ll be sad to part from these characters, I have grown attached to and the stories each of them had to tell. I am glad to hear you are taking a break because while you are a dedicated and amazing developer I felt you needed it. Like always I ll be excited to see these side projects you are creating for the way you tell each story has always been entertaining in their own way.

Serpentking

This all sounds great, I have enjoyed all the story so far and am eager to get into the rest of it. I will more then likely play this start to finish when it is done. I was curious if you had anything planed for after TLS as I know this was a huge project and well worth any and all waiting done for it.

sierralee

Haha, it does seem a little overambitious, but I often think in sagas. Maybe things would have gone differently if I'd started with something smaller, but I'm happy so many people are engaged with my story.

sierralee

Thanks! While I've given thought to what would come after TLS, I think it'd be premature to talk about the potentials there yet. I will say that I chose TLS because it was the best game I felt I could make within the limitations of my skills and my budget. For my next project I will consider the same factors and again try to aim high!

You deserve a break but ill be right back im gone cry in a corner;-;

Secular Reason

After what you did with that last update, you deserve a break. Especially since you have already shown that your breaks are truly breaks and not year(s) long hiatuses. But about the update; I've kept quiet, mostly thinking on what the IK said, and what the Demon said, and I wonder... Simon mentioned if he took the seed he would become something like the IK. That makes me wonder about those moments of "lucidity" from him during that final conversation. Were they really moments of "lucidity" or were they personalities showing through? If they were personalities, which was the real IK? Was the pervert him, and the seriousness the seed? Or vice versa? It would *seem* like the pervertedness was the seed, but that doesn't necessarily have to be the case. The IK could have been serious, but was mostly overtaken by the seed. Or he could have been a dumb pervert, and the seriousness was what was left of the previous holder of the seed. Either way, I'm not sure which is which. And now I really wonder... That IK fortress we found. The one where "there was no happy fuckings" or something like that, Qum said. Was that IK so driven because he knew about the Tower and what was both above it and beneath it? Is that why he was so focused, and didn't have any joy, only power? What was he really preparing for, and what took him out?

Scol

Seems like my comment disappeared for some reason. Repost: First i must say got pretty scared when i opened mail with "The Future of TLS" title. I thought TLS might be terminated/suspended for a while. Glad it is not the case and we got a roadmap instead. I've read about SyFy show (Dark matter) being canceled with the last episode ending on cliffhanger yesterday so maybe it took me into pessimistic mood but nethertheless I think that the correct feedback to the roadmap and eventual ending of TLS, which is IMO the best adult game, the best rpgmaker game and one of best RPG games (including AAA ones) out there, would be a list of expectations. Let me start with a bit about myself (in case of you profiling players): I'm primary RPG and (non 4x) strategy games player. My favourite games were Infinite Engine games (Baldur's Gate trilogy, Icewind Dale I and II, Planescape Torment), Fallout !+II, Mass Effect series (bar Andromeda), Heroes of Might and Magic series, C&Q series (before going int 3d games era), Portal series. Starcraft, Warcraft 3, Guild Wars 1 and Path of Exile. I only dip into adult games if they are enjoyable when disregarding the adult content, which left only few titles ( Sengoku Rance, Kamidori: Alchemy Meister, Fate/stay night, Sengoku Rance, TLS, Ouroboros, Crimson Gray - that's right, half of adult games i liked were your works, with TLS being the best of them <3 ). I'm also an optimizer and a powergamer, I like when the game presents me a lot of blocks to use to forge my own build/tactics/playthrough. TLS fulfuiled my optimizer urges more than i could hope. I tend to compare it to Mass Effect trilogy where you make a lot of choices during camaping to prepere for a grand war, but where the ME fails to deliver meaningful outcomes of choices made before, TLS shows AAA studio how it should be done more than once. So here's my expectations: - No perfect ending - during the playghrough we had to made a lot of compromises and I hope the end will keep it up. I hope that you'd be able to attain only one (or at most 2) of the following: perfect world state where nations end up trusting and cooporating with each other with all external threats defeated, harem members leading the a good life and having no regrets, Simon leading a good life and having no regreats. If SImon, all harem members and general population of the world end up merry and happy I'll be a bit dissapointed. - No chosing ending at the end of the game - another ME (and Torment: TIdes of Numenera) gripe. I want ending to be a result of my actions through the game, not a result of choice I made 1 minute before the end. - Get rid of Fucklord - I'm fine with Lustlord, Anak, Esthera and Lord of Blood surviving TLS but Fucklord needs to die. - One more Gathering, where Simon shows up - wether he'll outperform other sharbearers or end up looking weak to fool others, I hope to see how Simon could spin up the event into his favor. - Tyna as harem member - this is a minor expectaion but I've grown fond of her. - Simon revealing himself as Doom King - I kinda expected it to happen when his Dargai guise fell of during the wall and his allies said they expected honesty from him and I hope it will happen somewhere in the future. I'd hate to see him demasked again by someone else and I somewhat expect him to fail at making Doom Lord look as the bad guy for the whole Arclent just as he failed to look bad for Yhilin. This would be perfectly justified shock value IMO. - Trin getting more spotlight - aside from few character I'll talk about in the next point Trin seems to get significantly less spotlight than other characters. Also, her duplicates limit is usually enough to copy everyone meaningful so far. There were also some choices along the development road that I wish wouldn't be made: - Altina - every encounter with her has to take in mind a scenerio where she's Saner, Cockwhore or never recruited at all, which ends up with her taking a very minor role in most of the plots, usually being just a sidekick to other characters. Also, making her a cockwhore doesn't seam like something Simon would do and more like catering to a fetish. - Varia - Same as Altina but to a lesser extent, as she's always recruited and she has a role in the group as explosives specialist. - Orilise and Lynine - Orilise is one of my favourite characters but her and Lynine seems to be written as counterparts to each other more than as being themselves. I hope for some asynchronous content for these two, making them characters of their own instead being stuck as a pair. One more thing, I'd like to add is my favourite TLS moments so far: - Simon conteplating his new powers in Feroholm - usually in RPGs heroes never have to think over anything, they always make their mind instantly and just act. This segment (also because of gloomy Feroholm desing and music) made me think that TLS is something more than crappy pervy another rpgmaker game and stick for more. - Simon's early cooperation with Megail in Stineford and Yhilin - yet another harbinger of what TLS will offer. Hero realises his limits and tries to get help from others to fill the skill gaps of him and his allies. - 2nd Seed of Corruption - At that point i was starting to worry that Simon will be omniscient genius and everything will go his way. But then his plans are fucked and we learn a lot of things - there are more shards in play than IK and Simon, sometimes Simon plans will not go well and other mayor world players can spin his plot into their hands, and that his allies ended up trusting him and believing his vision as much as to continue his plans without him, not knowing if they'll ever see him again. That event was 2nd best plot twist in games for me (the 1st one wast Ravela encounter in Plansecape Torment). - Reunion - not much to talk about it, it was great follow up to to the previous event and party split and made my heart melt a little. - Ardford chapter - Biggest ProN investment turn so far, one of the hardest combat challanges (docks), usage of ProN outside of investing, whole politics and votings plot (I was amazed when I voted against my interest in Unpeople vote to secure help from Darghelon in future votes while also manipulating others to vote against Unpeople motions making it fail, felt like I was playing House of Cards game). - Encouters with chosen first found when clearing Order of Silence lot - nice to see a reasonable chosen after bunch of idiots. - War of Yhilin - I said it before few times already - that's how Mass Effect 3 ending should've work, - Post-war Yhilin House of Petition funds - While I prefered operating on ProN than on percentages (especially when percentages would go above 100) it was very nice to make investments that actually made life more comfortable for citizines instead of caring just for profits/supplies - 3rd Arcelnt War - War of Yhilin^2. Mass Effect devs can cry in the corner now. I hope the break before next update won't be too long but I'll understand if it happens. TLS is a rar gem and it's development should not be rushed. Thank you for an amazing story and keep up the good work Sierra! I'd also like to thank all the TLS wiki editors, especially Fluid Decanter, Lostone and Betatester - you guys made my playghtroughs much more enjoyable!

Sower of Systems

Agreed, I don't think anybody should fault you for taking a few weeks off at some point or even a month. You definitely deserve a real break.

sierralee

Thanks for all your thoughts, I'm very appreciative you took the time! I won't reply to all of them, but I will say that you're going to get a fair amount of what you want. I might as well let you down early, though: the ending is going to be a little happier than you're looking for. I can only hope that it feels earned by the end.

DukeLeto7

Minor quibble. When I read the Chapter 4 title card, I didn't see the word "Arbiter", I saw "Orbiter". I can't say if this is a problem with the font or if I am playing WAY too much Kerbal Space Program, though...

Decanter

I had this issue too. Didn't even consider "Arbiter", just kept trying to figure out wtf "Orbiter" could mean in that context...

NomiNomi

Hey Sierra I have a question that's been poking at me, do you have a general height for each character? We know Nalili is short from the blight cave and I imagine Hilstara is tall, but sprites make it hard to judge.

sierralee

While I do have general heights in mind for the characters, this part of my notes actually isn't very precise.

Quiet Stranger

It pains me to know that we're approaching the end, but it's a good pain. Stupendous work on the continental war. I truly wondered whether the Incubus King had some kind of hidden complexity—all the way until Simon looked into his soul shard and described what he saw as "a complete idiot." You had me going there. I even made sure to collect all of the special equipment laying around before I confronted him, certain that I could get a glimpse of a real human-- nope Haha. Ah. Thank you, Sierra. This has been such a great story and I can't wait to join Simon as he looks beyond the veil. Will there be multiple endgame scenarios that we can achieve, based on how well (or atrociously) we did in managing Arclent? Or based on the possible futures for Simon suggested by Riala, Sarai, and Janine? At the time, I thought that they were foreshadowing a final choice, but I suspect that their assumptions are fated for subversion by the surreal revelations of chapters to come.

sierralee

Haha, I've been looking forward to that one for a while, glad you liked it. ^-^ Regarding the ending: subversion, what's that? =P I'm not going to reveal the ending now, but don't expect it to branch into several discrete endings. Rather, there will be a mix of inevitable elements and those that will depend on your choices so far.

Bloody_Hadouken

With the quality of work as a whole that you do Sierra, it's safe for me to say I'm looking forward to where you take us after TLS is fin. Been following TLS for over 2 years (I think anyway) and I've yet to find anything I couldn't appreciate at the very least in any of your games thus far. It'll be a good ride.

Anonymous

I am both sad and excited. I've been supporting this game for a long time now. You've given me a character I actually like to wander around as, and built an actually interesting world. But I don't know what I'll do once I don't have more installments to look forward to.

sierralee

Thanks! I know TLS is first in a lot of people's hearts, but I hope once it is finally concluded people will join me in my next project. ^-^

Badger66

I am very interested to see how this all plays out. I will admit, I do not envy the task before you. I am not a writer myself, but I have heard by many renowned and less renowned writers that endings are the hardest thing to write. Trying to tie up all the loose ends and straggling plot threads thrown out in a story. I can only imagine how daunting of a task that must be. However, you have done beautifully so far, so I have faith you can create an ending that will satisfy alot of people. Because, let's be honest, not everybody can be satisfied. But continue on your path, and not only will a majority of people be happy, but you will, too. Keep up the great work!

Anonymous

Any chance for bad endings, like suffering a real defeat and explaining what happened after? It would be a nice addition to show that the stakes are going up.

sierralee

It's not likely. The only ideas along these lines that interest me are odd alternate timelines that would reveal too much about the ending by process of elimination.
