Gunner stirred as a voice called out to him.

“Sir?”

“Yeah?”

“We’re here, Sir.”

Gunner groaned as he straightened in his seat. He leaned forward and rubbed his face in his palms to wake himself. When he cracked his eyes, he realized he was sitting in the back of his SUV.

After Professor Callahan declared she was on board, the pair spent a few hours going over the plan. Once they concluded, he took her out for a late dinner to smooth over any misunderstandings and frustrations. It took them into the late hour, which meant a redeye flight back home.

Not all jobs were like this. However, the most critical clients demanded expediency. It took its toll through long hours and sleepless nights. But he wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

Gunner blinked as he took in his surroundings. He was back home in the parking garage. When he turned his head, Daniel stood with his door open, holding a hot cup of coffee in a to-go cup. The fixer gladly accepted it as he climbed out of the seat.

“Daniel, you’re the best,” Gunner said before taking a sip of the hot beverage.

“I figured you could use me the pick-me-up seeing as you’re still wearing the same suit from when I dropped you off at the airport.”

“That was always the plan. I didn’t take a bag with me.”

Daniel rubbed the back of his neck. “Oh… true.”

Gunner let out a short laugh and patted Daniel on the back, eliciting a smile from the young man.

After he took another sip of his coffee, Gunner pointed toward the elevator. “Has Velocity arrived?”

“Yes, she has,” Daniel said. “I picked her up from the airport yesterday evening. I believe she’s staying on floor twenty.”

Gunner pulled out a wad of cash and handed him a few hundred. “Perfect. I’m going to head upstairs. Thanks for picking me up.”

“Always a pleasure, Sir,” Daniel said with a small salute. “Just let me know if you need me.”

“Will do.”

Gunner walked across the garage and exited through the glass double doors. He entered his personal elevator and closed the gold metal gate. After tapping the top button for the penthouse floor, he waited for the elevator to climb its way to the top, the small chime signifying his arrival. When he opened his door, Flux stood just beyond it. It was obvious from her crossed arms and furrowed brow she was upset about something.

“You didn’t call,” she huffed.

“Yeah, sorry,” Gunner said, shutting the door. “I was pretty exhausted. I slept on the plane and the ride home.”

“I should have gone with you.”

“No… I needed you here in case there were any developments with those murders.”

“Well, there wasn’t. Nothing came back from the informants. The news is cycling the same thing over and over.”

“Unfortunate that the informants haven’t come back with anything. We might need to broaden our scope or up the bounty.”

As Gunner tried to step further into his home, Flux stepped in front of him and said, “I don’t like it when you’re out there on your own.”

“Out where?”

“Out there!” she shouted, pointing out the window. “You could get hurt!”

“I’m not completely helpless, Flux. I can take care of myself.”

“I know… but you shouldn’t have to. I should be taking care of you. It’s my job to protect you.”

Gunner rubbed the top of her head and walked past her. “You know. You’re cute when you get overprotective.”

“Cute?” Flux shouted. Her jaw slid open as she looked up at him with a sparkle in her purple eyes.

“Yeah, you can be cute sometimes. Other times, you’re deadly serious when we’re working. It’s a good balance.”

Flux’s humanoid form morphed into her gelatinous pool. She lunged at him and wrapped her tentacle arms around him while she nuzzled what he presumed was her head into his chest. “You’re… cute.”

The direct admiration caught Gunner off guard. While Flux always praised his accomplishments, this was the first time she’d said something that hinted at physical attraction. He wasn’t sure if she was doing it in a joking manner or there was some sort of intent behind it.

“Thanks?” Gunner said, laughing. After she held him for longer than he expected, Gunner tried to move. When she didn’t let him go, he cocked his brow and grabbed her wrists from behind his back. When he tried to pull on them, they became viscous and pulled a part in strands of her slime.

“Okay, Flux, I need you to let me go,” Gunner said.

“No!” Flux said, tightening her grip.

Gunner’s jaw dropped. She’d never told him no before. He’d always wondered if the day would come when her bestial nature circumvented his authority over her. However, she wasn’t hurting him. But he needed to maintain his control. “This isn’t funny, Flux. Let me go, now.”

Little bubbles formed in the core of her body and popped once they reached the surface, releasing her words. “But I need to protect you. You should always keep me with you.”

Gunner sighed with relief and a brief chuckle. He reached down and rubbed her back as he held her. “You know I can’t do that. There are times where I need you to be the extension of me. There will always come times where we are apart. And I have a feeling it’s only going to become more frequent. But no matter how far apart we are, you will always be with me.”

“I will?” she asked, with a few more bubbles.

“Of course. I know I probably don’t say it enough, but you’re special to me, Flux. We’ve been together for so long. I couldn’t imagine my life without you. You will always have a place in my heart.”

Her body molded back into a human shape, shifting from purple to a pale-pink color. Her semi-translucent head solidified as she looked up at him and smiled. “You gave me life. I owe my existence to you. Without you, I am nothing. You are my everything, Sir.”

“That’s sweet of you to say,” Gunner said. The fixer looked down at his friend. It was at that moment that he realized how far she’d come. She’d grown so much over the years together.

Their time together had flown by. He remembered the first time they’d met and she couldn’t even talk. She was just a blob. Now she was this strong woman with complex emotions and feelings. A far cry from the ravenous beast who had protected him so long ago.

“I’ve always appreciated your devotion, Flux,” Gunner said. “What would you say to a vacation between the both of us? Just you and I?”

Flux’s head perked up. “Really, Sir?”

“Yeah, my treat.”

“Can we go swimming today?”

Gunner let out a short laugh and leaned back. “No… not today. We’ve got so much to do. And not something that we’ve always done.”

“Then I don’t understand.”

“I want you to take some time to think about it. Think deeply about what you’d like to do. Anything that you’d like to experience or come to fruition. Maybe a vacation somewhere that you haven’t been to or something fun you’d like to do together.”

“Maybe we could go swimming in the Great Barrier Reef? I’ve always wanted to see it.”

“Don’t just respond immediately to the first thing that pops into your head. What I’m saying is that I want you to take some time to think about it. Think about something we can do together that we haven’t done yet. Just you and me.”

Flux scrunched her nose and nodded. “Okay. I’ll come up with something.”

“Good. Now, would you mind letting me go? I need to get a shower before our meeting with Velocity.”

Flux unwrapped herself around him, but maintained her hands across her chest. She formed a silhouette of her normal body as she looked up at him with a bitten lip. “Um… could I help?”

“Help?” Gunner asked, cocking his brow. “What do you mean, help?”

“I would clean you like back in the old times when we were always traveling and didn’t have access to a shower or a lake.”

“Oh, you’re talking ages ago, after we returned from the Gale. What brought that up?”

“I don’t know. I’ve been thinking about those days a lot lately. Just us and everything we’ve been through together. Everything felt simpler back then. Part of me misses those days.”

Gunner rubbed his chin as he thought about it. While I’m not opposed to the idea, it’s an odd thing to request. Maybe she wants to do this because she feels like it will bring us closer? We always had wonderful conversations when we would find an alcove and she would fill it with slime, and we’d just both lay there relaxing.

Gunner smiled as he reminisced. Maybe I could use the tub as a replacement? We can’t take too long, though. We still have to meet with Velocity to go over the plan.

“Okay,” Gunner said before holding up a finger. “But we can’t take too long. We still have to meet with Velocity today.”

Flux beamed and hugged him. “Do you want me to start here?”

“No, we can do it in the tub. Go in there and wait for me. I’ll be there in a minute.”

“Yes, Sir!” Flux not holding back her excitement. She splatted down into a puddle and slithered underneath the closed bathroom door.

Gunner shook his head before downing the rest of his coffee. He set the empty cup on his kitchen island and walked to the nearby wall. He lowered the mechanical shade button until all the windows were closed.

Once he had his privacy, he shuffled up the stairs to his bedroom. He tapped a recessed button on the wall. A soft whine of mechanical rollers filled the room as his hidden closet door rolled to the side. Dozens of suits hung on wooden hangers, firmly pressed and clean.

Gunner took his time getting undressed. He laid each piece of clothing on his bed. After retrieving their original hangers, he hung his jacket and pants back on them, placing them on the far-right rail to signify they were worn and needed to be dry cleaned.

Everything had its place. The shoes went into the small cubby holes while he rolled his belt and placed it on the shelf with the dozen other colors. He tossed his socks and underwear into a recessed clothes bin that pulled out from the wall.

After retrieving a fresh towel and a new pair of underwear, Gunner made his way back down the metal and wood staircase. Once he rounded the corner, a smile crossed his lips as he opened the door.

The bright white light of the backlit mirrors bounced across the pristine white tiled walls and ceilings. He stepped across the emerald-green tile before setting his clothes and towel on the top of the granite in between his-and-her-sinks.

When he turned to the far wall, the jacuzzi tub that was large enough to fit four grown adults was filled to the brim of Flux’s fluid. The surface looked thick and didn’t move, as if made from semi-transparent gelatin. A few bubbles rose to the surface, showing a sign of life.

When they popped on the surface, Flux asked, “Are you coming?”

Gunner grabbed his towel and approached the tub. He draped it over the edge before climbing inside, feet first. Over the next few seconds, he slowly eased himself in, allowing her to envelop him.

Her body was the perfect temperature. A warm blanket that had just got out of the dryer. In a manner he didn’t understand, any time she bathed him, she never felt wet, nor did she leave him feeling damp.

Once he was fully in, he felt her move him up, like he was floating without having to worry about his breathing. Flux kept him suspended as she worked. She pressed herself tightly onto his body. Her shape curled around every inch of him, from the tip of his toes up to around the backside of his head.

When she started her routine, the rush of familiarity raced into his mind. The process started with what felt like a wipe down. Waves of pressure extended down his extremities in wide swiping motions. Then there was the scrubbing. Her fluid body became coarse and sponged his skin.

Closing his eyes was a mistake. He wasn’t sure if it was because of the lack of sleep or the back-and-forth flights, but he lost track of time in Flux’s routine. It was her sensual whisper that brought him back to reality.

“Sir?”

“Mmm, yes?” Gunner said, half lucid.

“You’re so stressed. I can feel it all over your body. Your muscles are too tight. There are knots in your shoulders. This simply won’t do.”

Gunner half smiled. “Comes with the job. Not much I can do.”

“I could… try something new and help relieve you of some of the burden.”

“Oh? How so?”

Flux’s body composition became more rigid. It felt as though six pairs of hands covered each extremity and his back. They all worked in tandem to massage Gunner’s entire body. Dozens of little tentacles weaved their way in between his hair, performing a relaxing head and face massage. If he believed in heaven, he assumed this would be it.

“My word… Flux… where did you learn this?” Gunner asked.

“The internet,” Flux whispered brightly. “I’ve been studying.”

“Studying what?”

“More ways to care for you.”

“You know it doesn’t always have to be about me, right? There is so much more to this world.”

“I know. But seeing you happy makes me happy.”

Goosebumps covered his entire body when she released the knot in his shoulders. A tingling sensation fell down his back and into his legs. He shook and smiled as his assistant continued the massage.

“You’re good at this,” Gunner said.

“Thank you, Sir. It means a lot to hear you say so. I’ve been studying for weeks during any down time. The computer that you got me for my room has been helpful.”

“So, you’ve been using it?”

“Yes. At first, I didn’t like it. It was too confusing. But I remember how you taught me to never give up. To always keep trying. Now, I’ve come to enjoy it.”

“That’s good. What else have you been learning?” When Flux went silent, Gunner tilted his head up. “Flux?”

A bulbous gathering of slime rose from the pool, outlining the shape of Flux’s head. “I… could show you.”

“If it’s anything like this, I’m sure I’d love it. Do we need to get out of the tub?”

“No, this is perfect.”

“Okay.”

The massage stopped. Flux’s viscosity shifted and Gunner felt himself float up. She guided his body until he was completely horizontal, with only the front part of his face above her slime.

The sensation started at the top of his chest. He couldn’t quite pinpoint what she was doing, but hundreds of little taps covered him. There was no pattern. Each had a mind of its own. They split a part, moving to their own chosen destinations. Several moved up the sides of his neck and others down his hardened abdomen.

Gunner’s mouth slowly opened, releasing an unintended moan as he became absorbed in the sensation. As if sensing his pleasure, more little taps started on his upper back. He shook once more as the sensation overwhelmed him.

“Are you okay, Sir?” Flux asked.

“Yeah, this feels really nice. What is this? Some kind of Tai chi technique?”

“Not quite,” Flux said after giggling.

As Gunner sank into sensations, the small taps continued their journeys. He furrowed his brow when he felt a familiar tenderness ride up along his thigh. It’s at that moment that he realized the taps were thousands of lips kissing his skin.

Gunner jerked up, and his eyes widened. “Flux, what are you doing?”

“Making you feel good, Sir,” Flux purred. “Do you want me to stop?”

The fact that she didn’t stop while he decided made it all that much harder. Her kisses descended to his lower abdomen and up the side of his thighs. He let out a heated breath as he felt a growing warmth fill his core.

It had been close to a year since he’d been with another woman. His primal self… the one that he’d buried away for so long, thumped on the cage door it was locked behind. The decision became a battle of wills.

While the rattling cage echoed in his mind, his sanity pushed back when a visage of his companion’s smile appeared in his mind. This was Flux, his guardian, assistant, and confidant. Even though her beauty mirrored that of a movie star, they’d been together for so long that not once did he ever see her in a sexual light.

While Gunner considered her family, she wasn’t human. She was a vengeful killer puppy that had followed him from their first meeting. He’d raised her and trained her to control her bestial urges. Only after years of constant reinforcement did she show basic compassion toward others.

But she was never innocent, he thought. She was a wild animal who fed off her most basic needs and desires. For so long, it was an endless, consuming hunger that took years to control. Maybe this is just an evolution of that. Could this be part of the changes I’ve noticed of late?

The closer she inched to his manhood, the harder it was to think logically. But it was the care that he had for her that brought sense to the situation. I—I can’t go through with this, Gunner thought. At least not now. It would change our dynamic forever. I can’t undo all the work we’ve done together just because it’s been a while. She may not even realize what she’s doing. If she wants this, I need to make sure she and I are both ready.

Gunner wiggled inside her slime and sat himself up. “Flux, I need you to stop.”

A half body of translucent slime formed across from him at the other side of the tub. “I’m sorry, Sir! Is something wrong? Did you not like it?”

“It’s… not that,” Gunner said, smiling. “I just don’t think you know the implications of your actions.”

“I just wanted to make you feel good and show you how much you mean to me.”

“You were, but this is a personal line we’ve never even talked about before. If I’d allowed you to do what you were doing, it would have changed our relationship forever. Did you realize that?”

Flux lowered her head. “No… at least I don’t think so.”

Gunner reached out and cupped her cheek. “There’s no reason to be sorry. I figured it was just a misunderstanding. You just wanted to please me and make me happy. But there are just… complications to allow you to continue. Where did you even learn about what you were doing?”

“The internet.”

“Well… we might want to taper the sites you have access to,” Gunner said, letting out a short laugh.

“I’ve also… seen you… with others.”

Gunner crossed his arms. “You were spying?”

“I wasn’t trying to!” Flux said, waving her hands. “There would be times where you and the other person were shouting. I just wanted to make sure you were okay.”

Gunner smiled and snorted. “That’s… understandable. We do often share the same space. I’ll have to keep that in mind in the future.”

After Flux slowly nodded, Gunner climbed out of the tub and grabbed his towel. He adjusted himself, trying to breathe and calm himself down. The cool tile helped shock his body enough to distract him. Even though he wasn’t wet, he dried himself off with the towel before sliding on his underwear. As he started his normal routine, he glanced at the mirror, noticing Flux hadn’t moved since he’d exited.

“Everything okay?” he asked.

Flux retracted her slime into a humanoid shape that had her sitting with her head on top of her knees. “I’m sad.”

“Why are you sad?”

She looked up at him with a trembling lip. “I just wanted to do something nice for you and I ruined it.”

Gunner couldn’t help but feel pity for her. He walked over to the tub and leaned across its edge. “Flux… you didn’t ruin it. It’s just—we need to talk about it.”

“Okay, I’m listening.”

“Not now. But when we get some downtime, you and I can sit down and discuss what happened and hopefully I can explain why I had to stop it.”

“You promise I’m not mad? If you want me to do something in a particular way, just let me know. I can learn.”

Gunner reached out and grabbed her hand. He brought it to his lips and kissed it, holding it as he looked into her eyes. “I promise, I’m not mad. I’m perfectly happy. What you did is just complicated for us and needs to be discussed.”

Her mood instantly changed, and she smiled unnaturally wide. “I’m glad.”

“Now come on out of the tub. You can help me pick out what suit to wear.”

Flux sprung up to her feet. “Oh! Can you wear the purple tie? It’s my favorite.”

Gunner smiled, knowing that was what she was going to pick. “I can wear the purple one.”

The pair exited the bathroom together as they readied for their meeting with Velocity.
