I've seen a few questions about what differs between To Be A King here on Patreon and the upcoming Steam version. There are only some minor differences, so let me try to succinctly explain those.

Steam Achievements

I have no achievements in the game otherwise, but you get Steam Achievements in the Steam version. When Volume 2 launches on Steam (once it is done), I'll be including achievements in the Steam version there also. To get the achievements, you would need to start a new game with the Steam version as they are triggered during your playthrough.

Save Cloud Sync

Having the Steam version syncs your To Be A King saves to Steam's cloud. As I understand it, the first time you launch the Steam version, it creates some persistent data that automatically associates ANY copy of the game with Steam. This means it will also grab your existing saves, which should be nice, as you'll have a backup in the Steam Cloud then (as long as you launch Steam from time-to-time). And yes, it also means that it will sync your saves from the Patreon version, as long as you own the Steam version too.

Unlocked Image Gallery

The special image gallery available to $10+ patrons comes unlocked with the Steam version. That seemed fair, given what I'm charging for Volume 1 on Steam. No code required to access it. When I update the image gallery with new images in chapter releases of Volume 2, if you choose to patch your Steam version (see below on that), you'll need the code for the new images, but the old ones should remain unlocked.

Compatible Saves

In my testing, saves are compatible between the two versions, and that should not change. I did not make any changes that should break saves. The save location is the exact same.

Patreon Patches

The new patches that I'm putting out here on Patreon, beginning with Chapter 9, should also patch the Steam version.

Misc. Changes

Valve doesn't let me link to other marketplaces, so I removed any Patreon buttons, references, and links at the end of the game to Patreon in the Steam version. There was also one scene that they would allow, but would require me to put a big disclaimer on the store page. It wasn't important to the story, so I modified it and it plays differently in the Steam version. The Steam version also has a different game icon, and that is more for me to tell what version someone is running, if they report a bug.

Other than that, everything is the same between the two versions. I anticipate some folks coming from the Steam version to Patreon, at some point. When they do, I wanted it to be seamless for them to step in and play the new chapters. If you have the Patreon version, I see no need to buy the Steam version unless you really want to unlock those achievements or enjoy the Steam cloud sync (or you are feeling extremely generous). Just spread the word so folks who either don't want to go through Patreon or who prefer to buy it through Steam know it is available to them. The latest version will ALWAYS be on Patreon, since I only plan to release finished volumes on Steam.

One final suggestion to those of you looking to purchase it on Steam. I highly recommend a second Steam account for your NSFW purchases. If you're like me, and have no Steam friends, then go nuts with your main account. Otherwise, you might not want all your Steam friends to see you playing this type of game. Thank you all for making this Steam launch possible! Ms. Kaylan keeps asking where the cake is, and I don't have the heart to tell her.

Even if you decide not to pick up the Steam version, do get involved in the dialog, community, support, etc. which will evolve on Steam.
