So here we have a bit of an oddly specific topic that I'd like to riff on for a few videos; namely, that I think a great anime will always have a great first episode. There's no such thing as a great anime with a bad first episode, except for Gintama. I'll be taking at least 3 videos to attempt to prove this idea, so I hope you'll all enjoy it! This part focuses on the fantastic opening episode of Steins;Gate--a show that a lot of people seem to think "only gets good later."

By the way guys, thanks to you all, I was able to lease my first car today! Up until now I've been driving the family car, but I make enough now thanks to patreon that I could afford to get my own car. (You can see a pic of it on twitter. It costs a lot less than it looks since my dad runs the dealership and cosigned for the employee pricing.) I can't thank you all enough for making that possible!

How To Recognize A Great Anime (in just one episode) [Part 1]

I've never seen a great show that didn't have a great first episode. A lot of people seem to think that they exist, though, so I'm gonna set out to prove them wrong!

Wow, I can only imagine how frustrating it must be to read those comments. This may be a case where you should have released all of the videos at once though, or spoken about the general support for your thesis before jumping to a specific example. It really seems like some commenters aren't even accepting the obviously true point that, if the same people are working on the first episode of a show as on the rest of it, the quality of the episode and the show will at the very least be correlated. If the people making the show couldn't make a great first episode, it is at the very least less likely that they'll be able to make a great show.

I more or less expected the comments to be like this. I think what a lot of them are missing is that my point isn't that everyone should already be able to tell a great anime in 1 ep, but that I'm trying to show them that they ought to be able to by learning. In any case, I think it'll become more clear as it goes along.

i have been hyped for this How To Recognize A Great Anime series ever since you mentioned you were going to do it. I feel quite ambivalent about steins gate, i don't know why and i am afraid to label what i don't like about it because i might just be gripping onto the tangible details. But after this video i now whole heatedly love steins gate, thank you. You are great at nitpicking the good parts of an episode, maybe you could make a YourAnimeRocks one day? Keep up the good work.
