Hey guys! I just wanted to say although I watched this film days ago... it has stuck with me ever since, it really leaves this ghost of a feeling with you and I truly did not expect what this movie had transitioned into. 🥲 IT WAS REALLY MESSED UP BUT KEPT YOU ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT AND GUESSING - best way I could describe this film's experience

Yep sure is a trip this one is Vicky that really does keep you thinking . Amy was as mad as a fish but damn clever . The way it's all revealed is so good a very unique movie indeed 👌

I remember when this came out and every one went crazy over it. From the trailers it didn't seem like my type of thing so I went and spoiled it for myself, and was glad I did, because 100% this is a movie I would never choose to watch. Oh well, now I have to, thanks V :P.

As always, great reaction and thoughts, Vee! 💖 I watched this film twice and had the same reaction as you at the end of the film both times. LOL She's not "like" a psychopath. She IS a psychopath/ sociopath. This movie gives us one of the best and most scary examples of the difference between a horrible person and a true sociopath (a person with Antisocial Personality Disorder). It's an phenomenal film (excellent script and direction, etc.), but also a disturbing film (because sociopaths exist in real life 😱). Furthermore, I think exactly what you think! 100%! Below is the technical concept of what psychopathy/sociopathy is in general terms (Antisocial Personality Disorder). It's terrifying, sorry 😥: "Antisocial personality disorder, sometimes called sociopathy, is a mental health condition in which a person consistently shows no regard for right and wrong and ignores the rights and feelings of others. People with antisocial personality disorder tend to purposely make others angry or upset and manipulate or treat others harshly or with cruel indifference. They lack remorse or do not regret their behavior. (...) Symptoms of antisocial personality disorder include repeatedly: - Ignoring right and wrong. - Telling lies to take advantage of others. - Not being sensitive to or respectful of others. - Using charm or wit to manipulate others for personal gain or pleasure. - Having a sense of superiority and being extremely opinionated. - Having problems with the law, including criminal behavior. - Being hostile, aggressive, violent or threatening to others. - Feeling no guilt about harming others. - Doing dangerous things with no regard for the safety of self or others. - Being irresponsible and failing to fulfill work or financial responsibilities".

I watched this movie during the whole Amber Heard trial stuff because seeing her sociopathic tendencies inspired me to watch this film. I just watched it again with your reaction and yep, I am still convinced, Amber could of played Amy's role well, probably even better than Rosemund Pike, shed be a natural at it. xD

Ooooo, Se7en and then Gone Girl? Time to go through the rest of the Fincher filmography!

As a male, if I had to put this into a genre, I would consider this closer to "horror" than "thriller." This could happen in real life. To anyone. That's terrifying to think about.

Great reaction. I've watched this now a total of 3 times over the years. The latter two I thought there was a completely different ending than what we see. I'm sure whenever I watch it again I'll have forgotten again and my mind will have invented the alternate ending same as the last two watches; it will happen again.

"Zodiac" (2007) is one of the best thriller/investigative procedurals I've ever seen, also based on a novel and true events in the San Francisco Bay Area. "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" (2008) is the tale of one man's journey through life, the people he meets, the adventures he experiences, and the lives he changes. Gillian Flynn wrote the novel "Gone Girl" and wrote the screenplay for the movie based on her novel. She did change some dialog for the movie because what works in print isn't always the most effective cinematically, and she had the opportunity to tweak her story for the big screen.

Correcting, I agree with almost everything. 98% LOL Amy won, at least in her mind. She is fine as long as she feels in control of the situation and people. When she feels like she has lost control over someone or a situation, she desperately takes action. Amy felt that she had lost control over Nick the moment she saw him cheating on her and that she could no longer manipulate him. When she runs away and manipulates her "first boyfriend" - again! - the issue of being in control and under control is very clear. The guy tries to take advantage of the situation to control her in a very sick way. She takes action immediately, and the result is in the film. Nick is a selfish man; he despises and betrays his wife. Plus, as you said, he takes advantage of the naivety of a girl barely out of her teens. How do you defend a guy like this? He is not criminal or evil. He is despicable as a person. In the first act of the film, we are very well manipulated. When the film is in the past, we are being manipulated by Amy. She is narrating the contents of her "diary, " one of the tools she creates to manipulate the police. When the film is in the present, we become more convinced that she is the victim because of Nick's actions. But the exact moment we are hooked by the script is when she narrates that she was physically attacked by Nick (which we discover didn't happen). It's as if the fourth wall was broken, and we, the spectators, were heavily manipulated by Amy to the point that we couldn't immediately assimilate when she revealed herself. It takes a while for us to let go of everything we were sure of. My thoughts and feelings journey during the film were practically the same as yours. It seems to be an overall experience. These are the "additional" thoughts I would share. 😁

A pleasant surprise that you watched this one. I really like it. I particularly like how the characters react to the various twists in this and also how the media is portrayed. That part felt authentic. I have to give props to the score too for it was downright haunting at times, which is exactly how it made me feel by the end. Everyone's acting is great but Rosamund Pike was frighteningly good. Can't wait for you to eventually watch "Zodiac".

Awesome reaction as always. I love how complex these characters and the movie's ability to get audiences to simultaneously feel repulsed, angry, admiring, and empathetic to these people from one minute to the next. One thing I'm always fascinated by is how much we buy into narratives from unreliable, first-person narrators. You were spot on about the twist fairly early on, but it felt like you got sucked into Amy's diary entries to the point where you even doubted some of Nick's assertions that seem to have been more grounded in reality. But then again, how much is Nick lying to Go or even to himself to explain away his decisions and behavior? But this device feels so much more powerful in a movie rather than a book. If you read that Amy wrote about Nick pushing her into a wall, you can be somewhat skeptical of the account. But if you see the action and image in a film, it's so much more visceral that it's really hard to doubt even if the narrator is no more or less reliable in either accounting. Just a really interesting device that I think plays especially well in this movie.

Glad you liked the movie V! If you want more that have a similar vibe (imo), I'd recommend: Prisoners (2013) The Prestige (2006) Zodiac (2007) Same director at Gone Girl

Saul

Prisoners (2013) for sure is a movie that can pull your thoughts in similar ways to gone girl. Complete Unknown (2016) is also a mystery drama thriller with a complex character not unlike Amy. Nightcrawler (2014) with Jake Gyllenhaal has dark themes like these thrillers. It's one of those "there might not be any redeeming qualities" in any character.
