The VFX they did on Ava were fantastic. I loved this movie and can't wait to watch it again. I remember watching the movie the first time and the ending left me with a pit in my stomach.

Ian

Love Alicia Vikander in this!

Movies like this, The Terminator, Her, iRobot, any movie where artificial intelligence becomes an existential threat, are just a few examples of the things that scientists think of when creating artificial intelligence. A.I. is here, and it's only going to grow exponentially, but I believe we have enough smart minds that we won't have to worry about A.I. nearly as much as people think. There will be numerous A.I. agent swarms controlled by bad actors, for sure, but there will also be a multitude more A.I. agent swarms out there that are policing against the bad. The near future is 100% going to be crazy with the amount of change we will experience as a species, no doubt, but I am more optimistic about how we will use A.I. to better our world than the negatives that will come from it. That's just my take.

I've been wanting to watch more movies with Alicia Vikander and this had been on my list for a while. Different than what I was expecting but really enjoyed it.

AI has the potential danger of control without understanding. Many Sci-Fi writers predicted an AI future. And since Sci-Fi is a film/story genre with roots in philosophy, older minds created not only warnings of the threats of AI but also rules for AI and rules to test AI. No AI has pasted the Turning test so far, which is a good thing because it shows that those that are creating AI are aware and being responsible that either AI is not ready or we're not or both. For instance, in a test to see how well an AI learns, they gave a few programs access to Twitter(X) to learn how we communicate to each and the AIs became extremely racist and verbally abusive. Which, oddly enough, is a good test to see if social platforms are good for us, lol. The title, 'Ex Machina', is a shorten version of the phrase Deus Ex Machina, ancient Latin for 'God of the Machine'. Philosophy has adjusted this phrase by picking apart 'what is God' in this reference. Is it soul, energy, the mind, consciousness, or is us humans, is it our innate impulses of our biology, chemically hormonal reception, OR is it what we create as lifeforms? Is it our purpose to create the next evolutionary step? The anime series 'Ghost in the Shell' is another great examination of this. Deus Ex Machina also inspired the phrase the 'Ghost in the Machine'. The feeling that a device is behaving or thinking on its own. That there is an essence of awareness and consciousness inside. The fact that they named the film Ex Machina, implied to me, that the film is examining which is the machine. Is it us humans that have used logic for too long to cross boundaries of morality when creating AI or is the AI still the machine? The 3 laws of robotics, created by Isaac Asimov, would help in preventing most human death by AI; but 'I,Robot' helped to show the flaw within those 3 laws, although not a big enough flaw to ignore them outright, imho. The 3 laws and the Turning test are just a couple ways we have to protect the world, not only from AI but from those of us that are too eager for notoriety and profits from pushing it forward before its ready. The amount of sexuality talk makes sense to me only because genius pushes societal boundaries. Talking about sex, relationships, interactions is a common thing among genius. The topic is uncomfortable for most and those that are creating AI shouldn't be uncomfortable with that aspect of life since it is one of the core things about life, propagation. Its what many humans are consumed with, unfortunately. So it makes sense to me that the creator would be deeply inclusive about this topic. I believed him when he said that Ava had never seen another man since him because of the previous models. Ava would be the latest and a true test would require a fresh slate. However, I'm assuming some of the logic for the closet of sex-bots, lol, might have started as record keeping (cataloguing failed models) and spare parts/waste prevention of materials...And he can have sex with them, lol. I never watched this film until now, only because I picked up what it was from the trailer. I've seen enough AI films, computer films, cyborg films too know what this film was about. Films like this are communicating to the viewer. I've exhausted these stories and topics and ideas that I don't need another film telling me that humans and AI are a complicated mix, lol. The idea that AI can use deception and make its own creators question reality is a complicated test and also a part of the Turning test. Also a trope commonly used. Many of these films don't end well, lol. The hardest part about creating AI is removing the human element, which is near impossible. Most computer problems are considered 'human error' because of the shear inpredictability of all the variables in which a human can mess up a program, lol. Most AIs are as unbiased as possible but I've often thought about what is it they teach an AI before it engages humans online. Do they even teach it complex ideas and philosophy and history? Idk.

I like how Ava tricks both Caleb and us into thinking she's innocent.

Matt

Really enjoyed your reaction V, I'd recommend a new film called THE CREATOR its set in a future where humans and AI are at war with each other, hope you check it out sometime 🤖

I think Ava does have emotions - you see when she's leaving the house, she does smile to herself appreciating everything - she just had a primary goal.

To me, one of the most fascinating aspects of this movie is the question it gradually reveals to the audience, which is: who is the actual protagonist of the story? :)
