As somebody that played in my jazz band through high school and college, I can't tell you how much me and my friends quoted this movie lmaaao. Also fun fact, before Jk Simmons picked up acting, he actually graduated college with a degree in Music Conducting!

So I know you said there's different interpretations and that's definitely right lol cause I see a lot of reactors seem to fall in the same trap of seeing the movie more on the side of some inspirational story and how far you should go to succeed. But that's not actually the story it's trying to tell. Andrew Neiman isn't just passionate. This is a story of obsession. Fletcher doesn't look for just talent, he looks for people like him. Obsessed. Fletcher is so obsessed with not music, but perfection. Something that doesn't exist, but he absolutely ruins people to achieve it. It's a psychological manipulation where he sadistiaclly abuses his students. He literally drove a student to suicide 😅 this guy is not a good person lol. Fletcher and Nieman are in an abusive relationship. Neiman seeks Fletchers approval, no matter how much pain he's put through, to an unhealthy level. That's hella abusive. One other thing you missed. His dad's look at the end wasn't a look of being impressed or pride. He was horrified. Because the final scene might feel like it's Neiman breaking free of Fletchers abuse and he's soaring. But it's literally the opposite. Fletcher literally manipulated him to get him there again and pushed him again. And at the end, he looked at Fletcher, and like you said, he wanted his approval. He only smiled after Fletcher did. Nieman basically became the monster Fletcher wanted to make. The director of the movie himself said what's going to happen to Nieman after this. He's gonna die just like his dad said "Drunk, broke, and full of heroin at the age of 30." His obsession with perfection and greatness literally ruined him. But the movie masterfully tricks you into thinking its positive. One of my favorite movies of all time!

Samurai Shampoo01

Yep, they basically modeled Neiman after Charlie Parker, a famous sax player that died at 34 from a heroin overdose. The villain absolutely won

Lorenzo Baxter

Exactly. It's odd how many people seem to miss that lol it flies under the radar 😅

MrAlexSan

Dangit, I literally just watch this recently. Wish I knew this was coming down the Vee-pipeline lol

Matt

I want to mention another amazing film that Iv been hoping you'll watch one day but it never wins any polls CHILDREN OF MEN 2006 its an absolute masterpiece, and you also have to watch Ruby Sparks 😋

Samurai Shampoo01

Super cool fact: The song at the end has a style of fast paced Jazz that originated in the 30's-40's which was known as "Bebop"

Sneaky Poptart

Such a good movie! And you're right V, it is a little weird watching this movie alongside Invincible but J.K. Simmons is a treasure whether in live action or animation.

OMG VEE This movie, you taking a shot on the dark to watch a film not on polls or it winning one, is why reactors should stop relying on solely just poll result too much. Reaction communities all become the same with all the same movies being in polls and all the same movies winning and you see some amazing films NEVER getting the light of day that absolutely blow your mind like this. Your choices to react to movies that dont win polls and movies not in polls changes the status quo in all these same same reaction spaces because you have influence. You are a big enough creator that what you watch can have a ripple effect and others may see this film now too. Love it. More of this please!

Ian

If you haven't seen La La Land, highly recommend it! Same director, and a lot of the same cinematography you were complimentary of in this film

Jorge Hernandez

I'm so glad I went straight here instead of watching the YouTube video. This reaction was worth watching every second.
