Inhuman Paradox

Movie Trivia: Event Horizon is an infamously cut-down film. You see, the studio desperately wanted the film out in August 1997, so as not to compete with September's major release (Titanic). The film was still shooting but the studio was adamant to rush the film to release anyways. Typically DGA rules state a studio MUST give a director at least 10 weeks after principal photography completes to assemble their first cut (Note: The 10 Weeks Director's Cut is NOT what people usually think of as a "Director's Cut". The 10 weeks cut is typically a stage in between the Editor's original Assembly Cut and the true "Director's Cut", which then is typically cut down even more). However, the studio in this case effectively pressured Paul W.S. Anderson to sign an agreement shortening that time period to six weeks, with the knowledge that this would also count as both the DGA Cut and his final "director's cut" before the studio then made their cut, thus shortening time on BOTH fronts. To add insult to injury, second unit filming is not included in the DGA definition of principal photography, and Anderson had two whole weeks left of second unit filming when he finished the main unit principal photography. And with this being a film with a lot of effects sequences, it meant no editing could be done until that was finished. Thus reducing the editing time AGAIN to only four weeks. Anderson and his editors rushed together a cut that was about two-hours-ten-minutes, a cut they felt was still overlong but was the best they could turn out in the time they had. When the studio tested it, the amount of gore and long sequences left audiences so disgusted that they didn't just set about cutting the fat Anderson didn't get to, they cut a lot of sequences for being too gory as well, leaving the final cut the opposite extreme of Anderson's workprint. An overly short and compressed mess. When the film was set to come to DVD, Anderson reunited with Paramount to prepare a true director's cut in between the two poor cuts of the film, only to discover the worst: The footage had been stored improperly, and was almost entirely unusable. The only fragments that could be restored were made into deleted scenes bonuses, but no alternate cut has ever been released, nor can one ever be released. The only remaining version of the original workprint is a single VHS copy owned by one of the producers, but the footage on it lacks special effects and could never be restored to acceptable feature quality. Thus, we will never get to see what this movie truly could've been. All because Paramount was afraid to go up against that darn boat.

Hey Vee guess what, Event Horizon, combined with games like Resident Evil were the main sources inspirations for the -Dead Space- series. The creator of Dead Space mentioned in an interview that In some areas, the architecture is practically identical, and both Dead Space and Event Horizon put a fair amount of emphasis on dark, ancient evils with religious connotations. The Perils of the USG Ishimura in dead space 1 took heavy resemblance from this film.

2023-12-25 21:15:03 Event Horizon: No It's Not About An Oil Rig... ...I'm glad they went with the shorter title, lol. "We love Ourselves some Laurence Fishburne." I love how V always uses the Royal "We" and "Us" like a monarch, lol. Either that or V has some psychological identity issues. Which doesn't make us support you any less, V, lol! You're a lovely and loved person regardless of your delusions of grandeur, V, even if that isn't your real name! :D I love how V keeps talking about aliens, lol, "oh V, its so much worse than aliens" is what I wish I could say while watching this with you, lol. The spinning hallway in haunted houses was popularized by this film actually. My brother has worked for so many haunted houses and many places got that spinning hallway idea from this very film. Granted, it existed before this film but was definitely made popular again because of it. You got a great grasp on the intent of the film. Understanding the science of the film is can be really hard to grasp if you don't get the possibilities of alternate dimensions, and you got a lot of it. The theories of alternate dimensions/universes can get cloudy if you bring our understanding of physics and reality with you. You have to throw that away to see that this isn't Hell, its merely how we, in our reality, could only describe as Hell. Neil Degrass Tyson did a whole Nova episode on Black Holes which is great but to sum up, when you cross the barrier of the event horizon on a black hole, literally the only things we know are 2 things: physics completely breaks down, as in falls apart. We know light can't escape the event horizon and trying to wrap your mind around what is even happening to light on the inside of a black hole will drive the smartest people crazy. The second thing is that only one thing escapes a black hole and that is radiation. Other than that, we know basically nothing about the inside. Many used think that they are worm holes or if you go into a black hole you come out a white hole somewhere else in the universe. Combine that with the possibility of complete universes where literally anything could be possible and you get the idea that what if there is a universe where physics and reality as we know it means nothing. Absolutely nothing. Plus, there is a theory that we as humans will never know what dimensional travel or worm hole travel can be like because not even light survives crossing the event horizon, so why would we. Trying to grasp how our tiny meat brains, with our very delicate bio-rhythms and our faint electromagnetic fields can handle the shear forces of nature being torn apart to even create a gateway; bombarding us with those waves of destruction from the energy of our universe mixing with the energy of another. The idea that even being near something like that would destroy your mind, possibly even your brain, from the tidal forces of gravity and electromagnetism. For me, knowing these things, then watching this film, brought this film to a level of nightmare fuel I never knew existed, lol. This Hell dimension has the possibility of doing so much havoc to our minds that the even body horror aspect might not even register. Having a medical education in abnormal psychology and severe mental disabilities brought me an understanding of this film that I sometimes wish I didn't have. I have met people whose entire lives are just being tortured by their own mind every second of every day of their lives, without medication of course. When on medication, they get varying levels of relief from it. There is no reason to believe your minds could handle another reality, another universe. Our minds trying to make sense of a universe filled with a different kind of gravity, radiation, electromagnetic fields, physics, energy; being bombarded with it, flooded with it. Our minds trying to filter this, the electricity of our brains trying to connect neuron to neuron like we've been doing since the beginning of our lives; our hearts trying to pump blood; our lungs trying to grasp air molecules of a universe we didn't evolve in. The idea that we "wouldn't need eyes to see" in this new place. Trying to project the human experience and understanding on that for this forever damaged Gen Xer is delicious to ponder, lol. Love this film. Now that you have seen this, you should add 'In the Mouth of Madness' to your lists, lol.

I remember seeing this as a kid and the vid of the old crew after the jump gave my nightmares for dayssss =D

So yeah. Not about an oil rig.....

I think you should absolutley watch "Deep Water Horizon" at some point. Its such a good film to tell that event.

Chris

I love the fan theory that this is a prequel to Warhammer 40,000 where humans first discover the Warp

Frankie H

Apparently the writer of the movie got some of the inspiration from Warhammer 40k. This is why you don't go into the Warp without a protective Gellar field.

Frankie H

That the crazy scientist Dr. Weir was played by actor Sam Neill, who played the hero of Jurassic Park. As a child of the 90s it was very scary seeing my childhood hero from Jurassic Park turn into an awful demon man.

YodatheHobbit

Well, now I see why I completely forgot about this movie. it was a bit forgettable. Before seeing this again just now I would always confuse it with SPHERE. The dvd covers/movie posters are SOOOO similar.

James M

I watched this in the theater in the 90s and haven't seen it since until now. However, it's still haunted me in my dreams throughout all these years.
