Every time you mention how much you like Jean it makes me so happy! And can we talk about the dream team that Jean and Armin were this episode? Those two together are a powerful force. Yes, Mikasa is legendary in her own right but I love it when those two team up together. It actually makes me like Eren more that he had a hard time fighting Annie because he didn’t want to believe the truth. You’re right, he really does have a soft spot for his comrades and friends. He just believes in them so much and is so loyal. 😭 Looking forward to the finale with you! And then moving on because as good as this season is, it’s actually my least favorite—the other seasons are just that amazing.

When you watch that first fight again, before Annie kicks Eren's Titan head off and she does her pose, you can tell by the animation that Eren recognizes that it is Annie, and utters Auhh- then he gets defeated with the kick. The trauma and his denial made him forget what he knew and that he did realize it was Annie.

Possibly Eren was thinking too that if he turns into a Titan and fights with Annie in the city, innocent people may die during the fight. Just like his mother. That may be the other aspect of "throwing aside his humanity". P.S. Attack on Titan season finales have post-credits scenes.
