I wrote a really long comment while on my phone and then lost it. :( I will try to remember everything and write it here, now that I'm on an actual computer. Spoilers below!!!! It isn't really stated, but Akari and Takaki never speak again after the morning at the end of Episode One. The text messages Takaki writes in Episode Two are meant for Akari. He is dreaming of Akari and being on another world. But he can never bring himself to send the messages or reach out to Akari in any other way. The text message Takaki receives in Episode Three is from the dark haired girl, whom Takaki dated for 3 years after college. There is greater detail in the manga version of the story. There is also a novel that tells Episode Two and Three from Akari's point of view. I've read that Shinkai pitched this as a series, but did not receive the funding he needed, so he made it a movie instead. You liked the cat that appeared in Episode One. This cat also appears in the short film She and Her Cat, from the late 90s. It's about 5 minutes long, but is fantastic. I think it is important to see this film before Your Name or Weathering With You. It sets up the expectation that a Shinkai film may not have the happy ending you hope for. I think that makes his later films more dramatic. That feeling of nostalgia and loss is Shinkai's specialty.

Have a very Merry Christmas

Did the version you watch have no actual spoken dialogue with the characters? How is that possible?! Because they were totally voiced acted, japanese and english. HAHA

Love the Makoto Shinkai movies... so emotional. Oh and Merry Christmas btw! :)

Seeing as your a big fan.of anime, I have to recommend the anime-inspired Transformers: The Movie from 1986. It's based on the 80s Transformers cartoon, has stellar animation and an amazing 80s rock soundtrack. I think it would make for a fun reaction!

Oh, stop. ;) (Even I feel old for remembering those 80’s old-skool days when we had to recommend Japanese-outsourced afternoon cartoons as “gateway drugs” for new fans who couldn’t get any other “real” anime. Which WAS hard to get back then, but at least now we don't have to tell people to watch Robotech and Star Blazers anymore.)

NO THERE WERE VOICE ACTORS but it was definitely not as defined as they were in other films

Aw Lee!! Thank you :) Merry belated Christmas and have a happy new year!!

I actually used to LOVE the classic transformers so unfortunately I have seen it a long time ago!!

Even it is not a real Anime, it was "just" drawn in Japan, i really like this Movie very much and its Animation Level is still very impressive! Yes the Soundtrack is fantastic and after "Rocky 4" or "Top Gun" (i think some of the best Soundtracks ever :-))) ) also one of my favourite Soundtracks :-)

Ok, that's my bad. I didn't understand that it was still there but just really quiet. It was just super confusing because both times I saw it that wasn't the case. But I'm glad that you were able to find it just as much of a fantastic film as I did. I kinda want to watch it how you did now because of how much you loved hearing more of the background audio. Hopefully I didn't sound like a dick there. Hope you have a great New Years and congrats on the move!

So glad you gave this Shinkai masterpiece a shot. It is, by far, my favorite work of his. It offers a brand melancholy that is rarely found in much anime. This is poetry in anime form. While the masses seem to love them, I find Shinkai's more recent work much more commercial. 5 cent. has remained in my soul since the first time I saw it years ago. I revisit it often. It's almost a meditative experience. His newer works just don't effect me very deeply. Still, glad you enjoyed it and hope you will watch it again. Recommend "Garden of Words" if you haven't seen it yet. It is devastatingly beautiful as well.
