I also think part of why damon said that to stefan about not blaming him for forcing him to turn was more to alleviate stefan’s guilt as well. Blaming it on the katherine thing is much easier for stefan and also for damon to keep up his “bad guy” defense mechanism

I think that Damon telling Elena she clearly didn't bother to get the whole story and then telling her the rest was due to the fact that he actually does care what she thinks of him. With anyone else, he would have let them think whatever they wanted about him even if they didn't know his reasons for his attitude to Stefan. I loved the Damon/Alaric dynamic with them teaming up again. Their relationship has vastly changed from Alaric wanting to kill the vampire who he thought killed his wife. They're building trust and have saved one another now. Elena and Damon are comfortable around one another and she knows she can call him out if he does something she considers wrong. He came to town and didn't have friends and his relationship with Stefan was non-existent after 15 years apart. Damon, though he tries to deny it, now has Elena and Alaric as friends and accomplices. His relationship with Stefan is much better than when he returned to town. Even Anna and Pearl wanted there to be mutual trust between them. I really liked Pearl and Harper meant no one any harm. It's sad to see that John is such an asshole that he would kill them like that.
