Damon and Stefan working together to protect Elena was a step in the right direction. We now, however, have Stefan lying to Damon's face and then roping Elena into his deceit and expecting her to lie to Damon as well. He knows that will destroy or at lest seriously impact the bond that Damon and Elena have. Stefan is not the sweet innocent 17 year old boy that Elena seems to believe him to be. Damon would be an idiot to trust anything he says.
