Hello, everyone!
A few days ago, I made this announcement Tweet. Now, I am making and pinning its correlated public Patreon post.
I've been writing the high-level of this for over a year now. And as my Patrons know, I've had my nose to the grindstone for the past month writing out episode 1. The writing for episode 1 has finally been finished, and you can click here to read episode 1's screenplay, meaning that it has finally left preproduction and has entered production in earnest.
OVERBREED is a 6-part miniseries, taking place four years after the events of Overwatch*, filled to the brim with character relationships and the drama that ensues, interweaving storylines both resolving and complicating themselves with each episode, and a whole gaggle of everyone's favorite waifus desperately and passionately putting buns in each others' ovens. What, you thought the title was just for show?
A second Omnic Uprising swung into full force, moving from the Russia/Alaska line down into the heart of the United States, Europe, and Asia; with pockets of Omnic resistance popping up all over the world. Their goal, near as anyone could tell, was simple: prevent the cancer that is humanity from being able to continue to spread and abuse the world that gave them life.
While the Uprising was eventually quelled again, the fighting was brutal, and the losses uncountably high. Victory was pyrrhic at best. The fighting left a massive demographic imbalance in its wake: a dangerously significant portion of the world's male populations have been destroyed. Combined with the world's dense pre-Uprising head-count of just over 11-billion, and the sharp turn back to depending on manual labor over automation that was the natural consequence of the first Omnic Crisis, and the world is in a precarious place, teetering on the edge of calamitous collapse.
But powers in the Overwatch organization will not let humanity go quietly into that good night. The Second Uprising changed a lot, and the power dynamic and responsibilities of the elite combat force that singlehandedly changed the tide of battle in more arenas than can be counted on both hands, changed with them.
Doctor Angela "Mercy" Ziegler, perpetually driven by a need to help those incapable of helping themselves, has taken it upon herself to devote every resource Overwatch has available to it, and bend her expertise in medical nanotechnology into a novel solution to the population imbalance: allowing the disproportionate amount of women who outlived their male counterparts to reproduce amongst themselves, no men required.
She is joined by Doctor Moira O'Deorain, a genius geneticist once scorned for her ethical indifference and who turned to terror cell Talon for funding her research. With Doomfist's philosophy of "a world locked in combat is a stronger world" put to the test and failing resolutely, Talon collapsed and its members, disillusioned and directionless, have found new applications for their skills. Many of them--like Moira--gravitated to Overwatch, in a bid to try and heal the world they thought they were annealing with conflict for so long.
Moira's knowledge of manipulating of the human body, combined with Mercy's medical experience and nanotechnology expertise, has brought this new invention--this Reproduction Serum--on the cusp of viability.
There's only a few... kinks... left to be worked out.
*Blizzard have stated that the "the game isn't canon." I have voiced this opinion before with Rabbit.Hole, that Blizzard's writers aren't doing the IP justice, and so I have decided that if they're going to ignore their own work, then I am going to ignore their work too.
There's no two ways about this: this is going to be a long-haul project.
Each of these episodes are going to be long. Each has three storylines that it explores--some resolve, some complicate--within its runtime, all of them intertwined with each other and all of them contributing to the larger story in whole.
I am hesitant to give any sort of hard numbers, but expect there to be anywhere from 12- to 18-month intervals between episode releases. Despite my efforts and aspirations, I am still animating these projects entirely solo. Even with all of the tools and techniques I've developed over the years, the simple fact of the matter is that these things still take time, especially to bring to the level of quality that I hope you all have come to expect of me.
As for Episode 1, I feel even less comfortable pitching this but, don't expect a release before the New Year. There is a possibility, slim as it is, that it might be ready by Christmas. But that is absolutely an aspiration, not a promise.
Rather than suggesting a release window, I instead encourage you all to come along with me for the ride. I post progress reports every Friday on the $5 Progress Report tier. You all can be with me, every step of the way. And even if you're not comfortable with that, you can still check back every week and check the titles of the progress reports. Patreon allows you to read the titles (and the first two sentences) of posts, even if you're not a Patron, meaning that you can at least glean some general information about the progress of things, even if you can't read all the juicy details.
OVERBREED episodes will not be produced back to back. I will take a break between each episode to pursue a few other projects. These include existing series, such as Blue Star, Rabbit.Hole, and Liziverse; potentially sequels to existing projects, such as No Gods No Kings and Honeydrop Interrogation; and exploring entirely new ideas, such as Lulu or Witcher projects. Basically, all the things I've been doing for years already.
Nothing is being dropped or canceled in the wake of Overbreed's production. The schedule is just being adjusted to accommodate them.
Similarly, I am aware that 6+ months of production time for episodes is a long time to go between video releases. Toward this end, I am considering experimenting with a new idea: micro animations.
Inspired by how quickly Fraternization was produced, and how well it was received, the idea of micro animations is taking the high-level idea of Fraternization and cranking it to eleven: 90-second videos, fully voiced and produced, with an emphasis on lewd dialogue spiced up with just a bit of fucking to keep the ship afloat. You can see a prototype of exactly the kind of content I am gunning to produce with these micros by watching the old Andromeda micro I made some years back, which I unfortunately have no original high-quality files for and so won't add to my Films page archive.
The goal is to produce a micro every month, but that is a lofty aspiration with absolutely zero foundation to support it, so let's not even consider it right now. I have a grab-bag of micro ideas at the ready, with more being generated every week, and I am slamming the first one into production tomorrow. Will I be able to get it released by the end of August, while still making notable forward progress on Overbreed?
There's only way to find out!
That is all I have for now! Thank you all for reading! I hope you're as excited as I am! I've been sitting on this for a long time, and it's hard for me to believe that it's actually on the cusp of finally being made.
And again, remember that you can read the full screenplay for Overbreed Episode 1 right over here! So if you're interested in seeing just what kind of kinks Mercy has to figure out, then it's only a click (and a fistful of dollars - it's a capitalist world, and a burrowing nocturnal mammal's gotta eat!) away!
