I was very impressed with the first episode. Bending looks badass, they nailed the tone and spirit of the characters, and while there are tons of nods to the animated series, it’s not afraid to go its own way when it makes sense. But even when the story deviates from the source material, it remains internally consistent and plausible for these characters. It’s as good so far as I hoped it would be.

I haven't dived in yet, but I'm a tough enough critic to know that I'm going to have strong opinions based on some of the feedback I've heard. I'm hoping watching with Angela will help me just enjoy the show more!

Okay, after this first episode, I feel like half of the criticism I've heard of this show is unwarranted. Do they overuse CGI backgrounds? Sure. Is the acting a little awkward at times? No doubt. But like, it's a perfectly fine adaptation so far. Curse you Angela, making me tear up at the Gyatso parts. I'm convinced I could've made it watching alone. Great reaction, 5 stars. Oh and I heard some people disliked Iroh in this? That is the most approachable man on Earth if I ever saw one. If that's not Iroh energy, I don't know what is.
