Yeah - you get your tattoos from mastering airbending. So much wrong with this movie. The actors, the white-washing, the names, the bending, the pacing, all of it. Just awful.

Saw this movie in the theatre when it came out. I think I was 11. I ended up eating som much snacks and drank so much soda that I threw up around 20 minutes into the movie. That’s my memory when I think of this movie, and somehow I think it’s a better memory than many others have.

Normally I watch your reactions to join the journey of joy. This one time it was simply an interesting study in watching a person slowly descending into madness. My specific hardcore beef with this movie is that even though I know logically that a movie director probably would not do this, it SO hard to fathom how this is not made by someone who hated the series and just wanted to take a big dump on it. There is just SO much wrong that one can almost only think it is willful sabotage. That is even just the adaptation stuff... even if you look at the structure of the movie, it is just plain terrible how so much is told through voice-over and text. I mean, who the heck makes a full movie where characters are supposed to be one of the most important components only to make all development of characters and their relationships happen in text? There are errors made in movie production that I would dare to say, even a first year media student would be aware should be avoided.

It seems like they just combined the ideas of Roku's dragon and Avatar Roku (during those times Aang looked for his advice) in this movie. Maybe they didn't want to hire another actor to play Roku, maybe using a Dragon Spirit seemed 'cooler'. As an aside, watching Shyamalan's promos for this movie made me sick. He kept talking about how he'd be making changes from the animated series, 'making the movie more authentic to the source material' or something - which, the animated series IS the source material. Idk if he simply didn't watch the show, or worse, felt the show wasn't 'good enough' that he felt he needed to detract so much. It just oozes of pretentiousness and arrogance. I feel many people would've told him 'no' during various points of this production - but that was sadly eliminated since it seems he had the sole responsibility of so much. At least we know who to blame.

Shyamalan changed all the pronunciations because he insisted that's their native pronunciations. But the only one that's kinda close to that is Iroh, but even there they roll the R too much.

I don't think I watched any movie after this as a kid LOL, it's definitely funny-bad now but one thing I can't get over is how almost every actor aside from Yue (and maybe Aang/Ong) feels like they're trying way too hard in their performances, like they secretly wanted to be the main character. The script as a whole feels like it was written with the Ember Island Players as the source material lol

Despite editing this reaction video, I still have never actually watched this entire movie. Unlike Angela who was somehow able to sit through the entire thing, I got to cut out a ton of it where she wasn't saying anything without needing to actually watch the movie. That said, editing this reaction was totally worth it just so I could add a stupid hacky sack joke on a whim that probably only makes me laugh but it had me giggling for like 30 minutes straight while making it late at night. We all do what we must to survive.

Despite the terrible storytelling, bad dialogue, mispronunciations, and clunky bending, for me the worst thing by far was the lack of joy throughout the movie. The original is so fun and high energy while this tries so hard to be serious and I feel that ruins the whole tone.

They changed the pronunciations to be more "culturally accurate" but they were fine with white-washing the characters. The movie actually has the more correct pronunciations if you go by real-world languages but the issue is this is a fictional universe where the pronunciations have already been established.

I watched the edited version... Because I just couldn't bring myself to watch the whole movie, and honestly I skipped over most of the movie, in the edited version. Mostly I did it to laugh at your pain and I'm sorry for that. But yes you now know how the rest of us felt.

The Fire Nation ships are pretty much the only thing most people forgive about this movie. It's really funny that's the only good thing that can be said about a 103 min long movie with a big budget but that's how it is. Not only had they no interest in making justice to the show but they actively went out of their way to ruin it with stuff like changing the names.

I rewatched this movie with your reaction the day after I went drinking with friends, so I have a mild hangover. I am not sure if that made the experience of rewatching this movie better or worse, but at least I knew judging by your reactions and faces that I was not alone in the trauma.

I love that they didn't say anyone's name right. Because the character in this movie were clearly not the actual Aang, Sokka or Iroh. Whoever this Ong guy is might be the Ivatar but he was no Avatar. Seriously though I get ol boy M Knight chose to phone this one in but damn is watching 1 episode really that hard? The first episode of the show pretty much shows you the core of how each character acts throughout the whole show. If you watched that you would at least know to make Aang happy and fun. Hell Shyamalan said he made it for his kids because they watched the show, he could have at least asked them what the damn names of the characters are.

Ooooh boy, I just finished watching the reaction video and I feel I need to mark myself safe from watching this movie. I'm going to forever pretend this is a movie about the unrelated story of someone called Ovatar Ong who seeks to master all forms of a martial art that involves a lot of wasteful gesticulating that makes you vulnerable to attacks because reasons. Thank you for suffering through the full-length version of this so we don't have to.

I guess the reason you don't remember any of the characters from the movie in relation to the series is because they bear no resemblance to them - a travesty basically. I'm not a fan of slagging adaptions because they differ from the original, I love the Wheel of Time books *and* the series, the Expanse is an example of a damn near perfect adaption and Lord of the Rings too. But this movie is what gave adaptions a bad name.

So here's a couple things. The pronunciation is correct in "Oong" that's how you would pronounce Aang in Asia. However the original cartoon was pronounced AA-ng. Therefore M. Night really messed up the possibility for correct pronunciation in the future becasue they will only associate the correct pronunciation with this horrible movie. That probably goes for a few of the "mispronounced" names in this movie. I bet they are all actually accurate to the region but will never be able to be appreciated properly by western people because we only have the two references. the show and this movie. Also in this M. Night also went with the idea that fire benders couldn't bend fire without fire to start with. While if he hadn't ruined the movie I think that would be a VERY cool part to add. Making it so firebenders must carry around some sort of fire like katara does her water. and pull from sources of fire. and that people like uncle Iroh would be able to summon fire from nothing after being taught from the sun warrior masters. Although that would probably ruin the ability to bend lightning. But since he flopped the movie, the concept will only be hated by fans unless somehow done ABSOLUTELY PERFECT if they were to change something big like that again. it will be met with heavy skepticism lol

I was dying at you keeping consistent with the name correcting lmao. For some reason in this movie they decided to make it some sort of big revelation at the end that its possible for firebenders to make their own from their fingertips, as Iroh did, rather than using existing fire. I keep asking myself if they needed such sources how are they even winning the war at all? seems very easily combatible.

I'll take the challenge and say something positive. I love the soundtrack. Flow Like Water is amazing. I watched this in theaters and for large portions of the movie my eyes were closed and I just focused on the music. Not that positive looking at it now. What a terrible garbage movie.

He did say in an interview that he thought firebending was too strong compared to the other elements so he nerfed it. And it's like of course it's too strong you idiot that's the point, that's why they were winning the freaking war against three other nations all by their own, because they could make fire out of nothing both in combat and to work metal for weapons and tools. It's like the guy didn't even watch the show, even if he said he was a fan.

As far as the name pronunciations go, technically yes he pronounced them based on the regions of the world the names came from. That being said, he's not adapting real life, he's adapting a fictional show so Shyamalan is still wrong here regardless of his reasons. As for his excuse that fire bending is too OP... come the fuck on. Air, water, and earth are fucking EVERYWHERE. What do you mean fire out of thin air is OP?

But I agree that fire is OP because of it's nature, not because they can bend it from nowhere but just because of it's destructive and almost alive characteristics, it grows, it devours, it is inherently dangerous without the bender, add bad intention and it's very OP. Plus I like the Idea of firebenders carrying around lit lanterns in tiny grenade shaped mechanisms on their belt to always have fire to pull from. makes a cool aspect of their technological lead on everyone else. (again if done correctly). That said all I was getting at with the pronunciation was that nobody will be able to adapt an "avatar" based media with correct pronunciation in the future because he ruined his adaptation and used "different" (whether correct or not) pronunciation. haha that's all. I agree that he didn't do it correctly. hell he changed the pronunciation and then cast almost all white people. lol
