One of my favorite choices the animators make in ATLA is that whenever Zuko visits Iroh, it is framed such that Zuko is the one behind bars. He's locked up behind the image of what he imagines himself to be.

You kept asking what happened to Sozin to make him that way. It's the same thing in Ozai and Azula. And Zuko has it too, like when he turned in the crystal caves at the end of season 2. Even Iroh when he was the war general. It's a struggle for them all.
