Toph leveling up was so much fun.

Azula shooting lightning at Aang completely shocked me when I first watched it. You really don't expect a protagonist to get hit while they're doing their heroic power up sequence (despite it oftentimes seeming like a pretty good moment to get them lol). Not to say I was happy to see Aang get hit, but I do respect the subversion there! Zuko's decision frustrated the hell out of me as well when I first watched it, but I still had a lot of understanding of where he's coming from. Zuko was doing so well in his "recovery" in the absence of temptation-- he had no obvious way to return to the Fire Nation/restore his honor whilst in the tea shop, so it was easier for him to accept his destiny not being what he initially believed it had to be. But when everything he's ever wanted (or thought he's wanted) in the past is laid out before him by Azula, just so easy to reach for, it's hard for him to resist, even with the progress he's made. On the topic of the voice actor change for Iroh, I think his first line is actually in book 2, episode 15. I could be wrong here, but I think the line is where those kids break the window with the ball and Iroh gives them a word of advice (probably had to re-record it). The rest of book 2 is Mako --or at least the majority of lines are-- but that one line was I think the first line of the new voice actor, if you're interested in going back to listen :)

I remember back when i first watched these episodes, I was very frustrated with them. Just the decision that the characters made just made me punch air (almost became an airbender back then) and i can confirm that these episodes still frustrate me to this day. But its for the better, because the decisions made here shape the best season ahead of us. Cant wait to rewatch this again!

And lets remember, Azula is 14. She's as old as Katara.

Was never clear on it in the show about the cultural decorum with Agni Kai(s) , but with Zuko challenging Azula to an Agni Kai and her turning it down I always imagined as a big no no. That was a very dishonorable thing that Azula did, but she really does not care about honor like Zuko does so par for her. Even if she did accept it, I am not even sure Zuko could of won. Azula is just really bad ass.

Haven't finished watching yet but the quick turn around on Katara stopping for a cup of tea was fantastic. "YES!"... 5 seconds later... "OH NO!"

Ronald Foster

Aang doing his best Luke Skywalker impression and leaving an old master after having a vision of his friends in danger but before his training is complete.

Cyan

I can't believe you called Azula killing Aang in the avatar state 👀

02:49 : Thank you *SO* much for putting the concept of Sewerage Bending into my head 🤢😁

Personally, I thought Iroh overplayed his hand with Zuko, he pushed too hard, before he was ready.

I still remember my shock from back when this premiered about both Zuko siding with Azula and also Azula hitting Aang with the lightning. I felt so gob smacked by it at the time. Later Zuko's actions made me sense to me, after all even people trying to change and become a better person have their moments when they relapse and back slide, and I came to see it like that, especially since for so long he'd based pretty much all of his sense of self-worth, of where his place in the world was and how to get the validation he so desperately needed around reclaiming a place in the Fire Nation. And it's a lot to ask a, what, 17 year old to be able to see past all that. But it was such a blow at the time. I had faith that he'd eventually turn to good sooner or later, I thought there was just too solid of a core of decency in him, but you'll have to watch through Season 3 to see how that turned out...

The Fire Nation military tried and failed so many times to conquer Ba Sing Se. Azula walked in and took the city purely with the strength of her personality.

These two episodes are hard on everybody. It seems like everybody is just making the worst decisions one after the other and sabotaging themselves but it's deeper than that. These episodes explore those "crossroads" that Aang and Zuko have come to. Pathik's training on chakras may seem like it's only important in that moment for Aang's control of the Avatar State but it applies to Zuko, too. In the previous episode, The Earth King, Zuko has his dark night of the soul and experiences prophetic dreams, the same way that Aang had during the first episode of the season, The Avatar State. This, combined with Iroh's scolding in Lake Laogai, was Zuko opening his own chakras and leading him to that peaceful state where he had seemed to finally let go of his obsession with his father's love and forgiveness and recognized them as unattainable desires. He let go of that attachment binding him to his anger, leaving behind the tranquil, seemingly enlightened version of him that disappeared immediately when fulfilling his wants and worldly desires suddenly became possible again. Aang's training with Guru Pathik emphasizes that Aang ultimately struggles with the same thing as Zuko. He has the benefit of being raised as a monk, so he's naturally less attached to material things. However, he remains attached to Katara with his love for her. The pursuit of love is a desire of the body. When Guru Pathik told him that he had to let Katara go, he didn't mean he had to stop loving her. He meant that he had to recognize that love, accept it, and simultaneously accept that he will survive and persist even if that love comes to pass, and that he will ultimately have to choose destiny over his personal desires if he wants to be a fully realized Avatar. Even in his cosmic vision of Katara being taken captive, she presents a temptation for Aang even as she's saying exactly the same thing as the Guru. She's verbally saying, "Let me go." However, Aang only sees the subject of his worldly love potentially being taken away from him. He chooses attachment in the same way that Zuko chooses attachment. Neither can be fully realized until they are ready to admit that their own wants and needs will have to be set aside for the betterment of the world and the lives of all of the people in it.

So excited for you to see season 3. I'm hoping you'll do last 4 episodes at once. Maybe a live watch along with fans on youtube? I threw a party way back when for those last 4 episodes which they treated like a movie.

Noah Moore

just my personal opinion but your intros are a little to long. love your reactions though

Cyan

you have the full ability to skip to the reaction

The thing that stood out for me in the finale was Aang's crystal armour suit. C'mon now.

Stephanie Hundley

I LOVE reactors that take the time to talk about the story, and the characters. I’m not just here for their facials reactions, but their thoughts on it too.
