Love this episode and love the series. Did the people that cancelled this show even watch it before hand?

Myoclonic Jerk

They were watching the ratings. But this show was set up to fail from the very beginning.

I always imagined that River slashed Jayne because he was wearing a Blue Sun shirt. Hear me out on this... On the DVD commentary, Joss mentions that Blue Sun, whose logo can be seen throughout the show, is a megacorporation that essentially runs the government. High level execs at Blue Sun may have funded the program that tortured River and may have come to oversee the project. Thus, River hates Blue Sun, Jayne wears a Blue Sun shirt, slashy slashy.

The aesthetic of the show was intentional. The Core Planets/Moons are where the seat of power, and the wealthy live. The rest...Well...That's the commoners are. These last 5 will give you a good insight, but the movie wraps everything up. Sadly. As much as I love the movie, I think because of the reasons that led them to making it...forced them to compress several seasons of info into a feature film. No spoilers...but seriously. Get ready to laugh, in the next few...but when you get to Heart of Gold...Get extra tissues. *TRUST ME*.

Bingo to Micheal, and as "Lil" pointed out, River had a reason. Hate for the evil mega-Corporation Blue Sun. Not entirely sure this is documented, but the "Blue Hand Guys" are from the Blue Sun Corporation. Remember back to Shindig when River was tearing labels off the food cans? The food cans were produced by Blue Sun and labeled accordingly. It was subtle foreshadowing to Jayne having his shirt destroyed.

It was fun seeing you react to these episodes. Your facial expressions, especially your eyebrows tell a story of what you are thinking. What facial expressions will we get with the next episode? :)

Hi Xander! are we allowed to talk to him too?

This is the episode in the series where Whedon deploys the shocking level of violence (especially in the context of broadcast television) after setting a mild tone over all the previous episodes so the viewer is unprepared. It's a highly manipulative trope of his (cf Dollhouse S01E11), and Whedon's penchant for cheap thrills, despite the general excellence of this series, makes me reluctant to watch his productions. Prolly my least favorite episode. It isn't even clever in the heist aspect. The strongest part of the episode for me is the confrontation between Mal and Jayne at the end; otherwise this episode is just regurgitated pulp.

Simon Chamberland

Very good episode, not my #1 but it's up there. I'm always here for a good heist and it was a nice change of scenery. Like you talked about the locales are usually very dusty and brown lol so it was nice to see some more high tech stuff. Jayne was just gross in every sense of the word in this episode, we'll see if they can redeem him but he definitely hit rock bottom for me. If I was Mal, I walk right past that button at the end, no way I'm trusting someone like that on my crew ever again, enjoy your space walk buddy. On the other hand, great episode for Simon. He's really at his best when it comes to taking care of River. As a big brother myself I very much relate to that. Even if lil sisters can annoy the crap out of you at times lol, at the end of the day you'll always be there no matter what. It's like a protective instinct hardcoded in your DNA. Also first appearance of your new serotonin necklace? It looks really nice!

Bob Hanflig

Or this is the episode they switched the time the show was on allowing for more violence.

I mean, we've had mutilated bodies hanging from the ceiling, a guy splitting his own tongue and another guy being kicked into an engine, so I don't really agree that the show had a mild tone until this point.

Jefferson Ogata

That's a silly claim. Past off-screen violence left to the imagination compared to melting people's heads from the inside out on screen? Blood coming out of eye sockets? I think that is still pretty challenging for broadcast TV even today.

Eric H

The violence of the "Blue Hand" guys is entirely appropriate for the narrative of the show. The "Blue Hand" guys represent an all powerful mega corporation (Blue Sun). Blue Sun answers to nobody including the Alliance and has no boundaries.

Which Enterprise ship is your favourite? Mine is the E from the Next Generation films

funnylilgalreacts

Personally I like the one from the 2009 Star Trek movie. I'm an OG fan, but I love Captain Pike's ship 😍
