FULL LENGTH REACTION

I think Jayne and Simon are more alike than they'd like. They have a good heart but their brains screw things up. Jayne gets terrible, selfish ideas and Simon trips over his words. They both end up making asses of themselves. But they are embarrassed and ashamed when they do.

Leather1969

So many good pats of this episode. "It doesn't matter. It will still be there, waiting." One of the subtle ones that sticks with me. "I tore these out of you symbol and they turned to paper." Each as a separate thing means nothing, only on the whole is it a compete idea.

Robert Inman

When River is hiding and mumbling about Book's hair, she says his head is going to cave in and his brains are in terrible danger!

Terry Yelmene

Myth... ritual... these can only ever make a sad nonsense. However, the deep human spirit of those truly bound like our friends here on Serenity... well, that's a spirituality that makes all the sense in the verse. A truly 'sensible' wonderful reaction. P.S. Angela, be ready... as others have hinted... the notion of Jayne and a hat... let's just say, you'll know it when it comes round.

S. Goose

"And what happened, then? Well, on Serenity they say – that Janye's small heart grew three sizes that day."

Hapsard

I have to say that of all the episodes so far, the writing in this one stands out as the most having been written ... lol, if that makes any sense. Each of the story lines in it have the same theme of symbols and their importance. Obviously Book and River, and Jayne and the town ... even Simon and Kaylee and the symbols of civility Simon says he clings to ... but the one that fits with Mal's final assesment the most is Inara and what the virginity means to both the father and the son .... It all fits into a very neat package, but the question is, does it fit too neatly? .... for this reason maybe not my favorite episode in a series where I love and cherish every minute of time spent with the crew ... but some iconic moments. I surely won't ever skip it on future rewatches.

Not my favorite wrapup to an episode, but I feel like he learned some thing, but maybe I didn’t feel like he learned enough

No, I get exactly what you mean. It hits certain beats, but it didn’t feel substantive. I actually mentioned that the next reaction that as much as I liked this episode, it didn’t give me the same feeling with the rest of the episodes do. It was still a good time, it wasn’t a waste of time. I just didn’t feel like it was presented the way the rest of the episodes are.

The second I think to myself that you haven't commented on the singer's hat I hear "What's up with that hat?" 😂 That one was a really stupid lookin hat lol. If they want River to grow on me, having her call bullshit on the bible is definitely a good way to go about it (no offense Book). Like you mentioned, I'm glad Kaylee is calling Simon out immediately on his crappy behavior. He tells her he's trying to show respect but says to her face "I would never" like he's grossed out or something? That's a really weird way to go about showing someone you like them and respect them. For a smart guy he can be pretty dumb and kind of a dick. Hopefully he figures it out because she has been more than patient with him at this point.

Such a fun one! The Hero of Canton full song, sang by the hero himself! Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8omJvCrwRdY

I took the whole hair situation as pure comic relief. Add in Zoe's reaction and the conversation when she's hiding and it's just funny. Out of Gas is the best episode along with the very last episode... which never actually aired on television. I just can't wait for the Serenity movie either.

Terry Yelmene

@Jack Burton - Though every episode has its own charm and strengths, the series gets better over its run and 'Out of Gas' stands out, even among all these second half episodes. The tragedy of the out of the blue mid-season cancelation was thankfully remedied A LOT by the brilliant movie; Serenity, that helped bring 75-85% of the story home. And it helps that Serenity is just... A GREAT MOVIE!

Well, it was never my intention to appear superior in my beliefs, but it is my reaction, and they are my thoughts and feelings. I would ask for you to be tolerant of those things that just because somebody doesn’t share the same views as you do, you understand that theirs are different. While you don’t know my history with religion, somebody typically doesn’t feel the way I do because they were treated well by it.

Fair enough. All I will say further on the issue is these two things: 1. You may want to go back and watch that reaction one more time with fresh eyes. It may not have been your intent, but the way you were mocking the Shephard's faith certainly appeared to me that you were trying to appear superior in your beliefs - and it's not my Bible. 2. If there is pain in your past you have my sympathies, many of us do to one degree or another - including Christians. It's popular to mock Christianity (and to a lesser degree Judaism) in the US today because it's safe to do so, and they held the majority here in the States for so long here. Pagans are luckier than any time in history. I'm 52 years old and for the first time in my life I'm "cool" because I wear a dragon and was married by a Magus (it says that right on our marriage license!). I once heard someone say in a coffeehouse debate that "Christianity is the world's most persecuted religion", and the person they were arguing with simply said "GOOD!". This inspired me to look into it and I found that according to the International Society of Human Rights, 80% of all religious freedom violations worldwide targeted Christians. I decided then and there not to be a part of that. I know what it feels like. I will let you be now. I hope that you find solace to ease your pain and find your balance. I wish you nothing but good fortune in your future. Again, may your Path be the Light.
