2023-04-14 14:15:28 Okay... I've held off meta-level commentary on S4 up to this point because I think it's important for people to be able to form their own opinions. But now you've asked! And from the look of the comments, there are very much the mixed opinions I would expect. As for me, unto the show, I very much enjoy S4 but do feel it's in the same lesser enjoyment tier that I would put S1. That said, some of my favorite scenes and storylines either exist within S4, or begin there. The main-story on Ilus is actually the part that I feel drags a bit (in terms of screentime), even though I appreciate it and feel it fits overall. What I LOVE about S4 is all of the side-story and feel like those are its biggest strengths! We see Chrisjen uncharacteristically struggle a bit playing the 'Election Game' with Nancy Gao, who has a very sympathetic platform, even if it is a bit dismissive of the fact that Eros almost destroyed Earth and the Ring station almost destroyed the entire solar system. We also see Bobbie forced to live outside the law, and the Drummer & Ashford duo is at absolute peak enjoyment; and who would've imagined THAT after their adversarial beginnings back in S3. It's great, and like most things with this show, they continue to get even better as the season continues to progress from here - I'm looking forward to seeing your take on everything by the time we get to the end of S4. [steps on soapbox] As for how it all makes me feel... your point absolutely resonates, about how the constant barrage of real world negative news makes you feel bad. The show presents relatable problems in ways we can imagine existing into the future, ranging from dealing with the growing Earth population, to the social dynamics that cause strife between Belt/Earth/Mars... but I think they are what makes The Expanse feel like such a believable possible future and what makes it feel so human. It is neither an unbelievable utopia nor a hopeless dystopia - the thing that sets The Expanse apart is that, while it may depict realistic struggle, the moral of the story is to never give up. To be hopeful for the future. To believe the good of humanity outweighs the bad. I would not fault anyone for taking a more pessimistic view, of our own world or of The Expanse and the hypothetical future it presents. But I'd like to be on the side of hope, right there with Naomi and Holden. Well... that's enough soapboxing to last the whole season LOL. Maybe I'll comment again sometime during S5 =)
