Trish

oooh boy

Nenny

Welp. This is going to hurt again

Nathanael Fuller (Polygon Wizard)

When I started editing this episode and saw Angela wearing a Percy shirt, I was like "uh oh" and "this is perfect" at the same time.

Doug C

In your intro!!! "I don't know if it's an 'til death do us part situation" YOUCH!!

Firewalker

Yea that went about how I thought it would

Michael Kemmet

Us OG critters knew it was coming(or at least very strongly suspected once we heard Glintshore), but the show is drifting further and further from the game so we don't know when or if he'll return. The next two episodes are rough, even for us(I'm assuming Angela has already watched all three). I'm still feeling rough over ep9 even almost 24hrs after watching it. Game spoiler: Ripley did not make it off the island after killing Percy. It was one of the most cathartic enemy deaths in the campaign.

Aaron

Joined the patreon finally to see this! We are off the rails folks! Ripley did not survive glintshore in the campaign! Who knows where we go from here?!

Doug C

Season 3 has introduced a lot of changes from the tabletop game. They're hitting the big notes, but they've re-arranged several and added some new twists. So even if long term fans are being rocked here. "Different dimensions" is an interesting way of thinking of the differences in version, but it's more of adaptations in different media.

Christopher Hrkal

This hit hard during the original campaign, but this season has changed a bunch of things up to the point where I’m not sure in what direction they will go. I don’t think that they’ll deviate to much but the change is exciting. For example the adventure to get the Plate of the Dawnmartyr went down a whole lot differently. I also have a theory about Pike cause this blood thing is completely new to the show, but it would be spoilery so I’ll stay quiet. Love your reactions.

Rando

This has been a rough year for favorite characters on this channel! 😭 I don't know anything about the campaign and i'm probably huffing copium here, but the gun that takes souls did light up when he died and i don't think Vax saw his soul depart?

Michael Kemmet

More an adaptation as opposed to a strict retelling. The game is more chaotic since it's eight different people contributing to what's effectively a long-form group improv. And then you have the randomness of the dice. But a series is better served by having a single narrative crafted for maximum interest/impact. Giving you a stupidly long explanation: During the planning of the animated series, the group started by each contributing the bits they absolutely wanted to see in the series. Examples are Grog killing Kevdak by dropping out of the pokeball, Vax jumping out of the window after being confronted by the Briarwoods, Scanlan being ambushed by Kaylie, and dozens more moments both big and small. Those moments have been added as faithfully as possible given the format. But then the main people doing the series(Travis, Sam, Matt, and a bunch of outside writers) were free to rearrange things if necessary and alter the narrative if it would make for a better show. Sort of like was done with ep3 of The Last of Us. So apparently the show has more use for Ripley even though she originally died on Glintshore shortly after Percy did. Because the manner of her death was so memorable and cathartic, I expect she will eventually die the same way, just in a different place and time. (which is why I'm not describing how it happened) And speaking of chaos, I'm currently watching the new episode of CR where Matt is getting his revenge on the group by forcing them all to play their characters from two different campaigns at the same time. There are currently eight players running fifteen player characters at the table at the same time. Normally Matt has to play multiple characters at the same time(like when Allura and Kima would be in a scene), but now everyone else has to do it. Matt basically went an hour without having to say a word. :D The chaos has been glorious. lol

Pistols O'Brien

This is exactly the kind of spoiler she's said she doesn't want. She's said she doesn't even want hints about upcoming things and wants to go in blind. She's didn't even watch the season trailer

Justin miner

wtf with all these comments. i dont want to say shit but im gonna say shit... i dont get it. yeah we are in the dark with the changes but come on just chill!!!

Justin Green

The one thing I'll say about the Assembly is that The Cerberus Assembly play a major part in Critical Role's 2nd campaign, The Mighty Nein. which is in the works to also be animated soon(ish hopefully).

Justin Green

Also fun fact, that beautiful song was sung by our very own Matt Mercer

Moricant

This was a rollercoaster, even knowing how it played out in the campaign. And while things didn’t play out the same way, that definitely felt like Taliesin rolled a natural 1 on his persuasion check.

Nathaniel Castle

We are off the map Mateys! Here there be monsters. I love things are going off script from the campaign This is hitting so good (it hurts but it’s soooo good!) When Percy fell that hurt That hurt a lot Pike will save him though, she’s got to

genie

watched the last 2 minutes twice - once muting my version, once the reaction so I could differentiate the sobs between you and Vex 😥😥😥 and it hurt both times

Kyle Junge

Ripley is one of my favorite villains in this show. She's the perfect dark mirror for Percy. She is basically Percy if he never met vox machina and had let his quest for vengeance consume him entirely. I think that's why he gives her that chance at the end, he had a chance at redemption and while it's true that in her isolation she took things further than Percy ever got a chance to he still believes she is worth trying to save. After all why shouldn't she get a chance when it was a mere lucky meet-up that's the reason he isn't in her shoes. As for her motivations, we can clearly see evidence in the real world why just letting anybody have weapons capable of easily killing someone isn't the best idea, but when you've seen everyone you love slaughtered by a force more powerful than you can imagine, when it seems that if only those people had the means to defend themselves perhaps they could have stood a chance. It's easy to see how coming to the conclusion that providing those means is a good thing. GOD SHE IS SO WELL WRITTEN HERE!

Vexkun

I watched the campaign a few times, and relistening to it at work atm. As of this season, they are doing a lot of things differently from how it play out in the table game. Maybe after the season, we'll fill you in! Let's see how the last episodes play out first , and what words on more seasons. Plus we know they are working on a series for the 2 campaign, already seeing things from it make their way in like naming dropping the Assembly in this one.

funnylilgalreacts

Woke up out of dead sleep thinking about Percy. With “this is new” “this didn’t happen in the campaign” “this is an alternate time line” stuff… could this just be a Vax vision we are seeing?

Bryan Macklem

This is the "Legend" of VM. So in my head cannon I think of it as a retelling many years later of scholars and bards giving us a story that's been through the telephone game a few times.🤷 So of course things get mixed up, out of order, and who actually did what mixed up a tad.😉

Slick447

It's possible, but I don't know if they'd pull the "it was a dream the whole time" trope on us. There's powerful resurrection magic that exists in D&D, but Matt Mercer has always been a little on the stingy side with it (and for good reason honestly). My theory: Pike didn't seem to know resurrection magic from the Everlight, but they've just shown her using blood magic this episode. I think she's going to tap into something else to bring back Percy, but it's going to come at a cost.

David Bodor

Matt's singing was SO good this episode, holy crap I didn't expect Mercer to be the one delivering the tunes this season. He had the Ruby of the Sea song as well that was good too!

genie

yeah back in season 2 it wasn't Pike who did the resurrection, although she did assist. Kashaw from the Slayers Take did the ritual and said it's hard as hell to pull off.

Jek Jordan

That was Sam’s brother in law singing, Peter (or was it Paul) Habib.

David Bodor

Which one? This one in ep7 was Matt Mercer he confirmed it on Twitter too. He sung Ruby of the Sea in the launch party and it was glorious.

The Dreaded Scotsman

Note to self don't open the Patreon email about a new episode and see the thumbnail before watching the episode 😭😂😭😂

Dreanner95

No it was Matt. He confirmed it on Twitter. Peter Habib produced the song.

Bobby Hall

Anna Ripley was my favorite villain in the campaign. The “Talks Machina” series has been taken down, but Matt did interviews about the campaign and he said the main word associated with Ripley was “human”. She represents Humanity’s ability to adapt and overcome and change. She represents that humans will strive to persevere and exist, no matter what, fight to survive. Of course she’s the “this could’ve been you without friends” trope of Percy & VM, but I love that in a campaign about Dragons, this human who envies a member of our group causes so much pain. She’s such a good villain.

michael denny

nothing is for certain being a show and not the campaign but pike saying he's gone could mean his soul. I'm pretty sure ripley's gun glowed when Percy died so Orthax probably has his soul. So story wise it would make sense for the group to have to save Percy's soul from the hells/abyss before he can be resurrected........Hopefully.

Frank Izaguirre

When I saw you in that shirt, and realized what episode this was and I was just like, "Oh nooo."

Jonathan

Yeah, I didn't catch that when I first watched. Apparently the leader was "Icky", so we'll definitely see more of them in The Mighty Nein series. Love that they're already setting up for that.

Jonathan

I remember when this happened in the campaign. It's weird, when Vex died in the campaign, I didn't really feel anything because she was brought back so quickly. But in the series, I still break every time I rewatch that episode. In the campaign, Percy's death was the first time I cried while watching it. (Also I had just finished playing Life Is Strange the day before, that was a 1-2 punch that left me down for the whole week.) But here, it didn't really hit as hard. I think it would have been better if they'd saved the song for the credits. Also, despite having seen the campaign, I honestly don't know what's coming next. Which I absolutely love. They're making so many changes that while they are hitting most major story beats, I'm not 100% sure that they're going to end up in the same spot as they did in the campaign. For example (NO SPOILERS), Pike in the campaign, because Ashley wasn't there, never had any of these crises of faith that she's gone through in the series. She didn't get much character development. So all this stuff she's going through, this is all brand new territory. So I honestly have no idea where they're going to go with Percy.

Jonathan

There is a theory about why Pike's blood is special. NO SPOILERS. They did two miniseries related to the Calamity. The original 4-episode ExU: Calamity, which introduces us to the Brass Ring that Zerxus told us about in episode 4. The second was a 3 episode special they did called Downfall (episodes 99-101 of campaign 3) as part of their latest campaign. It shows a number of gods infiltrating the city of Aeor, which was a floating city that was destroyed during the Calamity. It's a long watch - each episode is like 3-5 hours long. But well worth it. They're both completely stand-alone. So no risk of spoiling anything from either the series or the campaigns.
