I love this story, it’s just excellent. The ideas in this story are so good and executed brilliantly. I think it’s interesting to see Rose and the Doctor laughing at the start of this story, it really shows how desensitised they’ve become and how lightly they take the danger they’re often surrounded by. They’ve been called out on their behaviour before by Queen Victoria in the episode “Tooth and Claw” and moments like this prove she had a point. Although, once the TARDIS is presumed to be lost their whole demeanour changes and that’s quite compelling. It’s like it begins to dawn on them how tough and dangerous the life they’ve chosen for themselves really is once they’re trapped in one place and have no way of escaping. They can’t just run away like they always do, they’re forced to take the slow path and face the consequences of their actions. I love the great scene between the Doctor and Rose, when they discuss what they’re going to do now that the TARDIS is gone. It’s so fascinating to see how terrified the Doctor is by the thought of settling down and getting a house. All of that stuff is completely foreign to him and I like how that contrasts with Rose and the way she nonchalantly suggests that they live together. It really shows that no matter how close they’ve become, they’re still two very different people with different life experiences. The themes of faith and religion explored in this story are so interesting; especially because of the way they challenge the Doctor’s perspective of the universe. The scenes where the Doctor tries to talk about his beliefs and being unable to do so are tremendous. He’s never really given thought to any of that stuff; he has a totally different outlook because for the Doctor the universe is simply a giant adventure. It’s a vast space with new things to learn and discover all the time. The Doctor defines the reason for his travelling is to be proven wrong, but how can he have any traditional belief system considering all the things he’s seen? He’s seen so much of the universe that these supernatural phenomena are meaningless to him. There’s always a rational, scientific explanation for everything as far as he’s concerned, but there’s no way to explain away any of this. It’s simply “impossible”. As the Doctor says it doesn’t fit his “rules”, which raises another great point. Our rules of what is or isn’t right or possible might just be meaningless and a way for us to keep ourselves sane and safe. This is perfectly demonstrated by the way the beast flips the Doctor’s absolute belief in science on him and asks if that’s his religion. However, throughout the story it’s shown that the Doctor and Rose’s faith and belief in each other is what keeps them going and in the end that’s what helps save the day and defeat the beast. Tennant deserves a lot of credit because he’s given a lot of meat to chew on, but it can’t have been easy to pull all of it off so well. His performance is absolutely amazing. All the stuff with the devil simply being an idea emanating from one place through space and time is such a cool concept. Destroying the physical form, the manifestation of the devil would be easy. However, the ideas and myths the beast creates around itself are harder to kill. It’s the people’s belief in the devil that ultimately makes him real. Something that exists within the mind, inside of us is real no matter how much we attempt to convince ourselves otherwise. Thoughts and ideas are much harder to suppress. The Doctor’s ecstatic reactions at the crew's sense of discovery and humanities curiosity is brilliant because he thinks he’s finally found people he can relate to. However, it’s not just a quest for discovery that brought them to the planet. They came to this place because of a power source, which they plan to use for fuel. They tampered with things they should have left alone because of their greed for knowledge, money and power. These are exactly the kind of negative characteristics one would associate with the devil and they ultimately became the reason for the beast almost escaping. The beast obviously relied and counted on those things as a means for his escape. This is a lesson that some secrets are better left undiscovered because they can destroy you and you don’t need to know or own everything. Almost everything about this story works. It’s just fantastic!

Rio

Well, as I Know you won’t be surviving your experience with the next two episodes, I just want to say thank you for all the years of fun and content!! 😌

Azmat Mahmood

I actually think Love and Monsters is pretty good until the final 15 minutes and even with those final 15 minutes, it's still not that bad overall. The one after that is bad though.

Gambit3838

You're not lying and also kudos for not providing spoilers. But yeah it's about to get rough.

William Wood

I loved this two parter, and David is fantastic as he always is, in everything I see him in. To some extent Torchwood is a must, given how much you watch, I think reactions to it would only be possible if you delayed watching Who. The first 11 episodes were broadcast between the end of this season of Who and the Christmas Special, the 12th and 13th were broadcast on New Years Day. Given I watched it at the time of broadcast it seemed integral to me following both series. But I’d binge watch Torchwood in the above order so you don’t miss putting out Who.

Rio

I would never spoil the absolute cinematic masterpiece Angela is going to witness 😏

Oty Safiry

The Tardis knew exactly where it needed to land so that it would be where it needed to be after The Doctor completed the mission he was brought here for.

Merkavar

Is that a spoiler? I dont know, just seems poor form to give opinions on future episodes, potentially influencing the reaction?

Merkavar

did they actually explain why Satan was imprisoned instead of just killed? Like make the prison, but with out the planet being kept in orbit, so it falls into the black hole?

nldw

yeah the next two are almost skip-worthy (love and monsters primarily)

Merkavar

Widely know among people who watched the episodes? Not a first time watcher? Not someone who hasn't looked into the series? You do you, but it just seems like normal behavior with reaction channels etc is to no talk about future episodes, even if it is as minor as "the next episode is the worst"

Chris Padwick

There you go - Doctor Who does theology. There's certainly a theme of faith there - Rose's faith in the Doctor & vice versa. We had the rare event of The Doctor being disconcerted, unsure. I enjoyed your reaction to Hitchhiker's Guide movie. By a happy coincidence, it's author, Douglas Adams was script editor for Doctor Who back in the 70s (writing for the 4th Doctor, the long-scarved, big-hatted, curly-haired, booming, sonorous, rich-toned Tom Baker) so the show has always attracted the highly talented (& discerning & sophisticated fans, too). At some point, you may like the idea of checking out some classic Doctors. There are some stories coming up that have their origins in the classic era & references to past adventures are pretty frequent. Besides, some of the predecessors are great (I suspect you'll be rather fond of his second incarnation: he played the flute for a start). Do let us know, I'm sure we can collectively find you 2 or 3 hundred stories to get you up to speed..

Wes Rumbelow

i certainly wouldn’t say they’re skip worthy. it’s part of the viewing experience.

Raymond Taylor

Honestly I think you would enjoy the more mature nature of torchwood, also more dark so seeing how you liked BSG, bets are you will like it as well

Merkavar

They are questions for you. You said widely known, I was asking you who it was widely known to while also point out that it can't be widely known to someone who hasn't watched the tv show or seems to know nothing about it. Capiche?

Paul Mason

I agree with Azmat. It's not even the last 15 mins for me, it's one line. There are folks that don't like L&M but there are plenty that do. I going to go ahead and predict Angela will be in the "liking it" camp.

Wes Rumbelow

that’s a valid point. the character work is pretty good, its just so… corny. and not in the fun doctor who way it normally is.

Anders Thomsen

Rose Tyler is so great as a companion in New Who, and I'm excited to see you compare her to the other ones (though Jack Harkness also counts) and see what you think... Personally I don't think she's the best of them, but that's just because my heart belongs to Amy Pond.

Ben

You don't need to have seen Torchwood to be able to follow upcoming Series' of DW. If you had never heard of TW, you'd have been none the wiser and wouldn't come away feeling like you've missed anything. I would say that watching TW alongside DW definitely enhances the experience but also doesn't do any damage if you choose not to.

Ben

Whilst I understand the rep 2x10 gets (even if I don't agree myself), I've always thought that 2x11 is over hated. Don't get me wrong, it's no masterpiece (nowhere near!) but I think it's just ok. iirc the original episode 11 was meant to be written by Stephen Fry but that script got postponed to S3 due to budget issues then scrapped all together when Fry didn't have time to complete the script. So what we got was a quick, low budget script that had to be thrown together, which explains the issues with the ep.

Russell Crockett

Torchwood for yourself, good idea. Torchwood for Patreon, better idea. I can only speak for myself, and although I would love for you to share that reaction with us, I feel it would be a big pain to edit it for YouTube, so Patreon exclusive or you can just ramble some thoughts to us it relates to whatever Who you’re on at the moment is fine with me.

Rio

Yeah, I understand that. I think there was potential there and it could have been interesting. I think its biggest crime is just being kinda “meh” instead of offensively awful…

overdev

would be cool if you would release two-parter episodes together :/

overdev

yeeeah the gun shooting even 10 years ago, was really silly the actors probably didnt get proper direction or something. guns have recoil :D

Cirieno

Incarceration in a cave for the lifetime of the universe is arguably a worse punishment than death.

Magus

I enjoyed The man in the high castle. Another good probably lesser known alternate history show would be For all mankind. Being an apple tv show already means its gonna have less recognition. But i love all the apple tv stuff ive seen. It is a "What is Russia landed on the moon first?" Since basically us landing on the moon ended the space race, there was nothing left to prove (might be a slight over simplification).

Peach

When do you imprison something? When you can't kill it. It's possible they didn't have the means to, and that blackhole probably wasn't there before the universe.

Vid Ryan

This episode reminded me that at some point you should watch Good Omens 🤔

Merkavar

I assumed the prison and the black hole was all part of it, that’s why the prison is in orbit and the two vases make the prison fall into the black hole if he tries to escape.

JBK405

"The Man In the High Castle" has a great concept, but it lost my interest pretty quickly. I hope you're enjoying it, but I never finished it.

Darren Withers

Season 1 only. With the recent controversy over Neil Gaiman, season 3 is cancelled and season 2 really felt incomplete without it to me. Besides, Season 1 covers the entire book, so more is hardly necessary, but feel free to disagree.

Darren Withers

I get you, and the answer is, not really. There is the story of “The Bitter Pill” telling the Blackhole spat it back out, but that’s all they gave.

matt

+1 for a Torchwood watch. If after a few eps you decide it's not your bag, you can always quit.

MertzRocks

For goodness sake, start with 2 or 3 DOZEN so she doesn't COMPLETELY lose her mind in the time vortex... :D

Carl Wilson

Presumably the civilization that imprisoned him was then also living on the planet, so it didn't want to fall into the black hole unless that was the only way to control the Beast? That was my guess.

Carl Wilson

I don't think it's a spoiler to say that part of why they mention Torchwood so much in this series is to promote the spinoff, but they're not going to mess up the plot by making it unintelligible if you don't. (Unlike a lot of Marvel movies and series, for instance.)

Arriane S.

Loved this two-parter reaction, and in your thoughts at the end you brought up a lot of really interesting points! As always, really enjoyed and it's forever a highlight of the week :)

Jessica H.

I need to watch season 2. I watched 1 when it came out and liked it but then never bothered with the rest. You've inspired me!

Jessica H.

I want to be on pit tiktok! PitTok?

Rio

I’m glad you enjoy them! I always have a good laugh watching them so there is always a positive takeaway for me in that respect. But if you can find enjoyment in those episodes then that’s great! 😁

John Williams

You are making me go back and rewatch this era of Doctor Who. As I watch your reactions it occurs to me that I don't remember how most ended. Then I think, "Well duh. You haven't watched these episodes in almost 20 years." Even the ones that are my favorites I remember a good part of them and then I think, "Wait a minute. Exactly how did that end?"

I love these two episodes so much And I cry so hard at the end. I love The Doctor's speeches. Especially this one with the beast.

Doccyy

I love the contrast in this episode between Rose's role in it and The Doctor's role in it. This contrast being perfectly highlighted by Rose and the crew running for their lives from the Ood, dramatic music and high stakes before it suddenly cuts to near silence as The Doctor is just slowly getting lowered into a hole while having a deep discussion on religious ideologies. I find the contrast both hilarious and quite unique since usually The Doctor is portrayed as more of an action hero in the episodes while the companion either tags along or gets trapped or captured, etc. So I liked how Rose this episode is the one having to physically take things into her own hands in his absence, while for The Doctor this episode is more just him sitting back and talking about his beliefs. Another thing I appreciated is there being no conformation on what the beast in this episode really is. Whether it really was the original devil or something else entirely. The Doctor doesn't know and he doesn't want to know. I think it makes for some really great moments when The Doctor has to deal with things that he either doesn't understand or challenges him on some ideological level like The Beast did in this one.

Maria Stoycheva

"It looks like the Stargate portal" - girl, I liked you before, I LOVE you now. Keep dropping those nerdy references <3
