This episode really showed off the tough ol bastads that are softies inside lol. And everybody is heading North to one of my fav arcs! Nothing bad ever happens in the Frozen North in stories right!? Roy learned Flame Alchemy from Master Hawkeye who for some reason had the only formula for it tatooed on his daughter's back. So Roy is the only one who knows it.

He put it on hawkeyes back because he couldn't bring himself to destroy the work he spent his entire life creating. But he destroyed all other evidence of his research so no one else could have it. He taught Roy the basics of alchemy but left it up to his daughter to decide if he was worthy of the flame alchemy. Which he then learned from studying the tattoo on her back. So she gave it to him in the end but after seeing it used in Ishval she had him burn her back to destroy the last remaining bit of the research. In theory Roy could write it down himself to recreate it but he would never.

The country to the north is Drachma. It's the largest country on the continent and functions like a Siberian tundra. It's a vast wasteland of cold full of people who want to live somewhere warmer south. And that invasion is held back singlehandedly by the commander of the north.

Loved your reaction, and it's great to see you continue to ask questions! One thing I love about this series is how present the Ishvalan Civil War is for those in the military. Like Nina is for the Brothers, It's still fresh in their minds, and really informs how they carry themselves forward. Knox, for example, was assigned to dissect those killed by Roy Mustang, as research for the effects of flame alchemy on the human body. After the war, he continued on as a coroner, no longer seeing himself as worthy of treating living patients. He separated from his wife after an intense bout of PTSD had him nearly kill her in their home. So, what we see in this episode is his family trying to reach out, as well as Lan Fan and May thanking him for saving their lives. The man tried to cut himself out of the life he felt was no longer his to live, but the world is showing him that it doesn't have to be that way. I also feel that's what Ed was trying to convey, in his own childish way, to Roy. He's going to continue borrowing money from Roy, a promise between them to work for a better future, but one that still has Mustang in it after it's done. It's a very sweet message.

i've taken ed and mustangs adversarial relationship as mostly playful/harmless. like ed probably chafes at being someone's subordinate and mustang doesn't like having this kid not falling in line. so to see their relationship grow like this is really a sign of mutual respect that was probably always there under all the bluster lol
