We had one of the most popular and iconic villains/monsters in the show's history be reintroduced last season with the Daleks and now it's the turn of the Cybermen! The origin story for these Cybermen is quite different from classic Who though. These Cybermen come from a parallel Earth, but in classic Who the Cybermen originated from Earth's twin planet Mondas (that's a whole other story that you'll understand whenever you decide to go through classic Who) and the mondasians decided to be converted to survive because their planet was crumbling. Here we have one central figure in John Lumic, who wants to force conversion on everyone else, so the story becomes more of a commentary on commercialism, corporatism and Messiah complexes. They altered and updated the Cybermen for 2006, to reflect the technological age we were living in by then and it works quite well

No, the UK doesn’t have a President. The monarch is the equivalent to the US President constitutionally speaking, as executive power resides with the Crown, but in practice it is wielded by Parliament. The Cybermen are another long-standing classic Who villain, I think second only to the Daleks in number of appearances.

The Cybermen are indeed from classic Who. Look up an image from classic Who at what the Cybermen used to look like and you'll see real cheese 😂 but that's what they had to work with back in the sixties and seventies and they wanted to keep it relatively close to the original design but upgraded slightly. And that's the big distinction between Cybermen and Daleks. Cybermen think they can always be improved and upgraded whereas Daleks think they're perfect the way they are. Hence why the Daleks haven't changed since classic Who and Cybermen have. If anything it's less about the design and more about what the Cybermen represent and that's humaneless humanity. Like the Doctor said, they have their brains but everything else has been deleted. No emotions, no anything because it hurts. And if someone can't hurt then they're capable of anything. As far as Mickey is concerned, he's more understandable now. If my dad left and I didn't have my mom and my Grandma fell down the stairs and broke her neck, I would probably be a clingy bitch too. Of course he waits around for Rose because Rose is literally all he has. And he thinks he's a failure because he blames himself for his grandma tripping. And then Rose went and left with the Doctor and he's just been so lonely. I can't fault Rose too much. If I was on a parallel world and Whitney was still alive or my grandpa, I'd probably do exactly the same thing. Don't worry, I'm not getting Elon's implant because I'm too afraid someone will hack it and rickroll me 24/7 😂 I've got enough voices in my head, I don't need implants adding to it 😂

The Cybermen are from classic who. They debuted in 1966, the same year as me, with the first Doctor. They are every bit iconic and popular as the Daleks. One of the classic helmets is on display in the episode "Dalek." They have been through a number of changes over the years, but some design elements persist. Most noticeably the "handles" on the helmets.

The UK has a Pime Minister who is like the President. At this point is mostly symbolic with very little actual power.

Azmat Mahmood

They look like a race that cobbled themselves together with whatever they could find because survival was more important than anything else. Certain human parts of themselves, like their hands and eyes, are still visible which gets across the idea that these were once people who chose to mutilate themselves. The original design gets across the horror of the Cybermen better than any other.

Yes, in practice Parliament, led by the Prime Minister, wields all the power. But constitutionally speaking, the monarch is the UK head of state just as the President is the US head of state. PM is the head of the government.

No spoilers - The Cybermen are definitely goofy looking in 2024 haha As a kid they were so scary. The Cybermen are a new rendition of the classic design. The designers were keen to make them feel different but not dissimilar. You actually see the old design in season 1 episode 6 "Dalek" in the museum. I promise you will learn to love them haha

I really like that scene between Rose and The Doctor talking about Mickey's backstory because it adds so much context to him as a character in such a small amount of time, like it explains exactly why Mickey has had such a hard time moving on from/letting Rose go because of all the abandonment issues he has. It also makes Rose look even worse than she already does for her treatment of him because she knew all that about him and yet still treated him horribly. I'm not saying she should just stay with him and put her whole life on hold just for him but knowing what he has been through in his life, she could have been more sensitive/gentle with him when deciding the travel with The Doctor. So now knowing all this, it makes you realise that Mickey was never pathetic (not really), he was just a very damaged person. Also John Lumic is played by Roger Lloyd-Pack who played Barty Crouch Snr in Harry Potter so we have both Barty Crouch's together in this and another cool fact on the subject of HP is that in the Goblet of Fire Novel, Barty Crouch Jnr first appears in a chapter called 'The Parting of the Ways' which is the Ep Tennant first appears in DW! While the Cybermen do look a little silly in 2024, you just have to try and bear in mind that these episodes are nearly 20 years old now and the Cybermen and other monsters/villains do get better as time/technology/budgets move on. If you were watching back in 2006 when this first aired, I reckon you wouldn't have them quite so silly! :)

Yeah, I appreciate the complexity of these characters so much and I like how imperfect they are. Rose is our main companion and we've seen many examples of what a great person she is and yet she still has flaws like any normal person and it's the same for Mickey and most of all the Doctor. The show is so much more interesting because these characters are multi-layered and we can at times question their morality and sympathize with other characters more depending on the situations. It creates a lot of interesting dynamics and character clashes.

The best thing about this 2 parter is the music, whenever I think of Cybermen I hear the 'DOO DOO DOO DOO DI DOOO' in my head. Instantly iconic earworm

Ahh, the Cybermen. Utter shower of bastards, they are! They have been scaring the bejesus out of me since the year dot. The Borg without their whimsical sense of humour. They are from the 60s (1st Doctor) & originally they had visibly human hands giving them a sense of being intentionally adapted but in a piecemeal way, as if it was intended to be temporary, an emergency fix to a dreadful problem. But ultimately, their solution took control. Prescient too. That's a problem with the Who world. Too f***ing visionary. Now, are you filling in your 'S/he was in Harry Potter!' card? There was one in the ep today (apart from The Admirable Mr Tennant. Keep notes, there will be a quiz. The fact that the Doctor is capable of being a bit of a shitbag on occasions is one of the show's appealing traits - and has been since the outset (viz a caveman a rock & the first Doctor pondering walloping him with it). This is no b movie morality. It treats the kids like adults. I watched your Hitchhikers Guide reaction. Did you know Douglas Adams was a script editor for Doctor Who back in the late 70s?

This episode's title card was top tier haha

Mickey's "It's never about me, I'm just a spare part." line is obviously foreshadowing, but I also wonder if it's a tip of the hat to one of Big Finish's most popular audios about the Cybermen, "Spare Parts". Also, Nick Briggs, who voices the Cybermen in the reboot TV show (and the Daleks, and other creatures) runs Big Finish and can be credited for being a part of the fandom (turned professional) that kept the franchise breathing during the long hiatus of '89-05.

Lee

Since the author of Spare Parts, Marc Platt, got a thank-you in the closing credits, I'd say it was definitely a shout out to the audio story.

MertzRocks

Wait... A TARDIS says, "Exterminate! Exterminate!"? Really?? :D Did anyone else catch that? 54:06 :D You're forgiven Angela!

Karl Ward

One part of the Cyber Cyberman design I (like?) is the "teardrop" at the corner of their "eyes". It's as though they are crying for their lost humanity. It's the tragedy of the Cybermen.

ZapWing

I like that in "School Reunion" Mickey was just "the Tin Dog" well, now Rose knows what it's like to be "the dog." And I think that's probably why Tennant and the Doc laughed.

Slytherin Forever

The First Cyberman story was the first doctor's last episode. In our universe (In Doctor Who) Earth has a twin planet - forget the name - and the humans there are the ones who invented and turned themselves into Cybermen. I think these Cybermen look good. Visually only minor things change about the cybermen in the modern era. This is how they look. If you think they look cheesy as their most modern appearance you should google pictures of what they looked like in that first episode way back in the 60's. It's called the Tenth Planet for reference. "Doctor Who Tenth Planet Cybermen." Although for the time. Very good design. And very creepy looking.
