Title card for this episode was 10/10. Best one yet. 😂

Anders Thomsen

So now you've met the Cybermen... the second most classical Doctor Who Enemy. They do look kind of goofy (except there is a later episode where they are fucking awesome), but they do have some good stories. "The design need some work" ha!... you should have seen them in classic Who. They were basically a guy in silver jacket, a silver balaclava and a big tin helmet

Aaron D

That Theremin effect and new title sequence was great! Yes, the Cybermen design is cheesy, but I think the idea was to go for something "quaint" or retro-esque. Something like Centurions would have been dope! Although the original design for the toasters from the original 70's show was also a bit cheesy too. (ᵇʸ ʸᵒᵘʳ ᶜᵒᵐᵐᵃⁿᵈ)

Sean

I love how they develop Mickey in this episode. He just wanted to see his grandma again and it is such an emotional scene. Also, did you notice Mickey griped about being the tin dog and now Rose is a dog?

Josef Schiltz

The Cybermen have to be the most worked upon design in the series history. Created by Dr Kit Pedler, Doctor Who's scientific advisor - when they employed one - and script editor Gerry Davis for a serial in 1966, they went on to become the Doctor's third best enemy. Kit Pedler had concerns at the time for the possibility of cybernetic implants, especially the brain, replacing our humanity. Another Kit Pedler script centred around a world-wide-web of computers taking over humans which was controlled by a super computer called WOTAN which was installed in the newly completed GPO Tower - 1965 - now The British Telecom Tower - in London. Some of the earlier Cybermen designs are far creepier - although the singer and actor Toyah Wilcox, fangirling, thought they were a bit pervy. These designs are a slight departure and look more robotic, which takes away from their more surgical body-horror origins.

You did see a Cyberman previously once. There was a Cyber-head in Henry van Statten's underground museum in the episode "Dalek". The Ninth Doctor waved at it, calling it an "old friend---well, old enemy". The fact that you called the entire plotline in the first minute of the episode either speaks to your observation skills, or to the cliche plot. You can go either way.

Space Monkey Mafia

"Mommy, I want a Centurion!!" "Hush, we have Centurions at home."

Frank J

My personal criticism of new era Doctor Who Cybermen is that they look too robotic. Like you wouldn't assume that they're anything else than robots if you don't know their background. In classic Doctor Who, however cheap the suits might have looked, at least you could still see that they were originally humans, transformed into these Cybermen creatures. Therefore, at least for me, they have a much more creepy quality to them than the newer ones.

David Vandervliet

The Cybermen were the second big recuring monster to be introduced in Doctor Who. Way back in 1966. And they are probably only second to the Daleks in popularity. In the original series, the Cybermen started on Mondas. Which was originally a twin world of Earth, where life also evolved, but that got thrown out of the solar system thousands of years ago. Mondas wondered space, and to survive, the people there developed cyber tech to survive. In 1986, Mondas wandered back close to Earth (in an episode that aired in 1966) and invaded. They appeared again and again, each time they look a little different, but the handles are pretty consistent.

Jeremy B

Welcome to the second big bad monster from Classic Who. Like the Daleks, the Doctor has battled this enemy many times through many regenerations. Others in the thread have commented on the design, and I agree with Josef that this look takes away from their body horror origins - although it's a major upgrade on the extremely basic look in the 1960s! Keeping the reveal until the closing moments of the episode was a big thrill for long-time Whovians. I have to say I find the Cybermen even more chilling due to the way they assimilate humanity, compared to the Daleks who do at least kill you quickly! I don't know how much Star Trek you've watched, but I'd imagine the Cybermen have to have been an influence on a major enemy in Star Trek The Next Generation.

All this WHO you been feeding us is beautiful. We eating good around here. Lol

funnylilgalreacts

What is so funny I was trying to think of what a better to design for the Cybermen would’ve been and in my head it definitely looked like the Borg!

Jeremy B

That's really funny. They've got to have been an influence on the Borg? You've already had one sneak, blink-and-you'd-miss it, look at the Cybermen. Van Statten had a Cyber helmet on display in his museum during Christopher's episode 'Dalek'.

Josef Schiltz

"Your distinctiveness will service us . . . Number One!" or as a Cyberman in Tomb Of The Cybermen' stated, "Yuuu will bee like uzzz!"

Craig

You are correct that the "10 years of my life" is a bit of a fridge line when said by the Doctor, an unaging species "How many years do you have left?" "Yes."

Azmat Mahmood

The Time Lords aren't an unageing species. They do age, just at a much slower rate than humans. The first Doctor was hundreds of years old by the time we see him on the show and he had obviously never regenerated before and he looked like an elderly man. The "ten years of my life" line makes sense because 10 years means nothing to someone like the Doctor and it just means he'll now age at a slightly faster rate than he would've otherwise.

sothcweden

I think that, in John Lumic's worldview, the Borg are still comprised of too much biological matter to be what he wants: safe. He wants to enclose the brain in a steel cage to make sure the only part of himself he sees as valuable is forever preserved and invulnerable, so different from the way he feels in his failing body. I like that we're getting another twist on the message from School Reunion, that everything has its time and everything ends, and we have to try to be strong and accept that. Keeps cropping up in this season, doesn't it? Because you could interpret Girl in the Fireplace as also containing that kernel of truth, since the Doctor - having become part of events - couldn't jaunt back to pick up Madame de P., but had to accept that she died and never got to go traveling with him. Also, the Doctor says that the Cybermen have to have emotions removed because being like that hurts? I like that their design seems to include a tear dripping from the corner of each eye to represent that.

Tuckgrr (Doctor Nerderer)

The Cybus Cybermen/2006 Cybermen might be my least favorite Cybermen design because of how robotic they look. Too android, not enough cyborg.

Josef Schiltz

Same here. Too robotic to be scarily just inhuman. The face is near enough - just - but the rest is just too much like a child's toy robot and the noise as they clang about is ridiculously over the top. To be scary, they need to be silent more than anything else. Big whopping mistake.

Josef Schiltz

I seem to remember in one novelization a Time Lord was approaching his regeneration at the age of two thousand existing in the Time Lord Capitol's rarefied state. I think it was a Pertwee novelization, but I don't recall which - and it is years since I read it and I believe it was in the novelization only, not televised. Of course, the writers added little notes of colour to the stories and it may have been Terrance Dicks, whom we can excuse. We could possibly take it that the Hartnell Doctor was closing on 450 years old certainly as Troughton's Doctor stated that he was around 450 years old to Jamie and Victoria at the beginning of Tomb Of The Cybermen, taking in account no appreciable gaps in companionship from the very beginning of Hartnell's time until then.

Seeing as this is a British show I'll remind you that Elon spent last month stoking race riots in the UK (which is doubly ironic, seeing as himself and his family were desperate to flee South Africa 15 seconds after black people first attained civil liberties), and is now spending this month trying to instigate a coup in Brazil because *somebody* finally decided to stand up to him. He bought, not made, all of his companies, he's not a real scientist, he's never made a reusable rocket even if he did make them himself, he sabotaged the Ukrainian militaries internet access because he "disagreed" with their strategy (he's also got a lot of ties to Russia, make of that what you will), he's an insecure manbaby who is only given attention because he's managed to claw enough money under his influence that he's allowed to hold us all hostage

Some0neElse

DELETE! DELETE! :D BTW it feels weird when i realize im practically the same age as Jackie

Hugh Diffey

Have to say I vastly enjoy the old Cyberman design. It can be varying levels of freaky, especially seeing as you can actually see a human performer inside these spandex suits, which, adds to the body horror of it, you can almost imagine the flesh just pulped and mangled and wired inside. The modern designs (which I was introduced to first, and low key is probably why my nostalgic attachment has always been to the Daleks rather than the Cyberman) are literally just: robot. That is really lame compared to the old design

funnylilgalreacts

Mickey was the best part in both episodes! The Cybermen story was happening around Mickey's story and I loved it

Craig

Reply deleted as I realised it technically has spoilers

Jamie Grayson

On the topic of cosplaying (intro tangent) I feel like we all know exactly who you're gonna wanna cosplay once she appears in the show, but we can't yet mention her because.. spoilers 🤫

Hugh Diffey

I actually don't know who you mean lmao, give me a hint? (or send me a DM)

Elon knows what he's doing submit to the brain surgery!

Rory Owens

“Elon desperately wants the world to be saved. But only if he can be the one to save it.” - Sam Altman (someone else people shouldn't look up to, but he was right on the money)

Fun Fact: The Cybermen are one of the oldest enemies in doctor who, this story reintroduces them to the show. They first appeared in the First Doctor's final story, way back in 1966!

cartoonrobot

Angela has seen a Cyberman before. Or part of one. Season one, in the episode Dalek, the Doctor saw a head in the alien artifact museum and called it an old enemy. They looked different back then. The Cybermen have evolved a lot since the 60's.

William Wood

I’m not so fond of this design of the Cybermen, it’s better than some of the older versions, but I preferred the 60’s ones. They seemed more horrific, as they were closer looking to human. The story was good, especially with the parallel characters for the actors to play.

Space Monkey Mafia

To be fair to the redesign of the Cybermen, the old versions look really bad and BBC doesn't have CGI money. That being said, there are videos out on YouTube of cyber men frolicking in the park. They are quite funny.

Deven M

I relate sm. sometimes you just gotta take a walk around the block before coming back lol wall anchors and screws are so hard to install sometimes for no reason lol
