One of my favorite fun facts about the series is that the final moment at the end where Ed bursts back through the door isn't in the original manga! It was added in for the anime, and the original creator said she loved the change. I think it adds a lot of extra emotion to the moment, and the promise to return to Al is a beautiful way to end the season.

FYI Something like 90% of events or confrontations depicted in openings never happen that way in the show. I wouldn’t worry or try to figure out what elements of an opening might be “spoilers”. They’re just meant to be cool, eye-catching clips.

I love that this is the episode that it makes clear, "it's like he's praying to God". Ed can transmute without a circle because in putting his hands together like he is praying to God, his soul communes with the knowledge of God and shapes the world with only his imagination.

It is interesting how they show transmuting without a transmutation circle as looking like praying. But I would contest it's less of commuting with god. As far as alchemy goes I think the explanation the show uses of they create the matrix within themselves thus can do transformations without a transmutation circle is more accurate than praying. It's a short cut. Ed, Teacher and Alphonse do it instinctively. It's like the knowledge is unlocked. Part of why they reference what's in the portal as "truth." The issue of calling it strictly praying, is, you are not actually communicating with god. When you pray, you are asking for something but don't get a response. However it is purposefully made to look like praying. Also in this episode god is a little interchangeable from the Abrahamic version of god to a more colloquial term. And it brings up an interesting idea. What is god? How do you define god? This episode named a perfect being. But what is that? It's actually a very broad definition. Religion in general is non specific about what a god is. Powerful, sure, and cannot die of old age. Some can create life. But many religions have gods that can be killed. So not immortal in the sense of will never die. And many non Abrahamic religions have gods that are emotional. Quick to anger, vengeful, lustful. Desire power. Those all sound like human traits to me. Wrath and the other homunculi look down on humans as weak. Because they can be killed easily and are fearful. But the homunculi are human as well. Artificially created, but still the same composition of humans (carbon and so on) and they still have emotions. But are harder to kill. And maybe don't eat and don't sleep. But does a lack of that mean you are not human? That gets answered in how the characters view Alphonse. He is human because people treat him human. He's made human connections in his current form. Small aside that may have been addressed already. But I don't think Scar is killing in the name of his god. When he gave up his Ishvalan name he gave up any connection to god. He's just on a murder rampage. While he does reference creation as the province of god. He isn't actually trying to convince anyone he's righting wrongs against god. He just wants blood. That was a long comment sorry. Long time listener first time caller type of thing.
