Yeah, the Torchwood series 1 runs alongside Who series 3, so you don't want to watch it before finishing the current series of Who. This is a very fun episode, and the next one's even better...

On the subject of the special effects and the CGI ... what you'll see is each season basically DOUBLES its budgets. Every season. It just gets that much better. You can already see the benefits this season over last season. So those slitheen episodes in season one ... they're just about the worse that the effects ever look. :)

If we want to get specific, Season 1 of Torchwood happens between episode 10 and episode 11 of season 3. Then season 2 of TW is after the end of S3 of DW. Then S3 TW is after S4 DW. Then S4 TW is after S6 DW. I think they wanted to make it as simple as possible.

Technically, it's just the end of S1 of Torchwood that takes place between eps 10&11 of DW S3, the rest of it runs concurrently with the rest of S3

For some reason (prolly Angela), I really enjoyed this viewing of Tooth and Claw, whereas every time before, the ninja monks and werewolf plot always seemed rather meh. The Queen's stuff was always great, though, and this time was no exception. Watching Torchwood in proximity to DW requires careful timing. When NuWho was airing in first run, Americans had no (legal) way to watch Torchwood until the DVD boxsets were released, and so the third season finale of DW spoiled several key points of season two of Torchwood. Just a heads-up, if you want to experience the shows in the proper order.
