Oh fuck yeah! Didn't even know this was coming up on the channel! Watching next. Can't wait for Angela's reaction! It gonna be stressful!

Everyone please have a moment of silence for the Youtubers trying to create content on the rooftop in Ginza, before Godzilla nudges the building they were on and copyright strikes their channel.

Few things (OK, in hindsight a lot more than initially intended lol): 1) re: Godzilla being "just a monster", in my opinion he's not. In contrast to many recent American Godzilla films where Godzilla is mainly driven by territoriality, this Godzilla is much more of a reactionary creature. When we first see him they flash a light in his eyes so he attacks the light, then they shoot him so he attacks the people with guns. Then they accidentally drop a nuke on him at Bikini Atoll so he starts attacking ships, and he kept attacking ships until he reaches Japan and attacks the people sending ships. Then they start using speakers to bait him so he comes back and attacks Japan again because apparently they didn't learn to leave well enough alone. Almost literally everything is instigated by the humans in the movie. 2) A lot of the characters, aircraft, and ships in this movie are real. The commander of the operation to take down Godzilla was a real life well known naval commander, and the Shinden fighter was a real prototype that existed. All the ships used in the operation also, and even the Takao which Godzilla nukes with his heat blast was a real ship. There was a lot of care taken to represent an authentic Japan of the time. 3) If you haven't seen it yet I would highly recommend watching Shin Godzilla next. Up until this film was made it was the best new take on the Godzilla formula and I would put them both together as masterpieces of different kinds. 4) At the end of the film you'll see a mark growing on Noriko's neck. This is a reference to another Godzilla film where heavily wounded people getting Godzilla's biological material on them gave them his regeneration temporarily, and could be an explanation for why she survived what otherwise should have been a death sentence. 5) Finally "why the fish look like that" is because deep sea fish rising to the surface suffer massive decompression, which causes their gas filled insides to expand faster than their flesh, either inflating them like balloons or turning them inside out. Good on the prop department for accuracy.

One of the best movies I've seen in awhile. Well this what's ChatGTP gave me on the title. :P The film is notable for its title, "Minus One," which has significant thematic and symbolic meaning. Here's why the film might be called "Minus One": Context of Post-War Japan Post-War Devastation: The film is set in Japan after World War II, a period when the country was dealing with the catastrophic aftermath of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as well as the destruction caused by the war itself. Japan was economically and socially devastated, essentially starting from "zero" or a point of extreme hardship and loss. Minus One Concept: The title suggests that Japan is not only at "zero" due to the war's destruction but has been pushed even further into negative territory—hence, "Minus One." This concept implies that the appearance of Godzilla, a massive destructive force, worsens an already dire situation, dragging Japan from a point of post-war recovery ("zero") to a new low, or "minus one." Godzilla's Role as a Symbol Godzilla as a Metaphor for Nuclear Devastation: Since the original 1954 film, Godzilla has often been seen as a metaphor for nuclear destruction and the dangers of atomic weapons. In "Godzilla Minus One," the monster likely represents an additional catastrophic event for a nation already struggling to rebuild. Godzilla becomes a representation of an existential crisis that takes a struggling Japan further into despair. Emotional and Psychological Impact Psychological Toll: The film's title also reflects the psychological and emotional toll that Godzilla's presence has on Japan's people. The idea of "Minus One" emphasizes that the nation is not only dealing with physical devastation but is also being mentally and spiritually crushed by this overwhelming force, which further highlights their struggle and hopelessness. Reboot and Reset Reboot Concept: On a meta level, the title "Minus One" may also be a nod to the fact that this film kinda serves as a reboot of the Godzilla series by Toho, essentially "resetting" the franchise. It could signify a return to the core roots of Godzilla as a symbol of fear and destruction, pulling back from the more heroic portrayals of the monster in later film series.

OH Angela! Just finished reaction, and it was everything I thought it would be from you! Even without the personal family history connection. I used to walk across town when I was a kid to the Saturday matinee - back when they let 10 year old kids just walk across town - to watch Clifford the Big Red Dog and the guy-in-a-rubber-Godzilla suit movies in the summer. This is without question or debate, the BEST Godzilla movie made. And it's because of the parts that are USUALLY the boring parts you want to fast forward through. Loved your reaction. So glad you got to watch it! Hope it gets 1M views on your channel.

You're all watchin' shows and movies and doing your thing pretending like Shogun didn't happen. Shogun happened. Just sayin' I'd really enjoy a Shogun watch-along. :]

I couldn’t keep up with Shogun though. A lot of the stuff they talked about was historical and a lot of words they use were specifically Japanese terms. I wish it was a good reaction series for me, but I guarantee you I watched the first episode and it was not a good reaction.

In Japan after the war ended it was considered year zero because the country had been reduced to rubble so the “minus one” is referring to being below zero. One thing I love about this version of Godzilla is you see he is actually hurt by his heat breath and by the mines and other bombs he gets hit with. He’s anti-fragile, the more damage he receives the bigger and stronger he gets but also the further he gets from being what he’s meant to be. He’s a tragic figure. The sailors saluting at the end are paying respect to a fallen god. The reason this movie is so good is the director works in special effects and they made the effects shots first wth the whole process being integrated into the filmmaking. One story I read was about how one of the team was experimenting with cgi water in his downtime and when the director saw what he could do they worked out more underwater scenes. By contrast the big Hollywood productions shoot the movie and subcontract the effects to smaller companies who are placed under incredible pressure and deadlines especially with Marvel/Star Wars where the story is changed as it’s being shot meaning the effects shots also need to be redone often multiple times. Sorry, I’m still salty about Taika badmouthing the effects of Thor: Love and Thunder. Dude, it was your movie don’t blame the folks working hand to mouth to execute your vision.

I appreciate the response. I can't say that I agree that you just don't get it or something like that. It's not rocket science. You're allowed to not understand everything right away. I sure didn't. But anyhoozle, you just keep doing you. I'm a fan and will stay subscribed as long as I have means to do so.

Nathaniel Castle

First time watching this film as well. The movie and the reaction were an absolute delight! I’m hoping with the veins on the girl and the regenerating Godzilla they have plans to make more!

I started the edited version and realized that I wanted to watch this again. By far my second favorite Godzilla movie, right behind Shin Godzilla. This was such an amazing experience and I'm glad to watch it with you again. The ending gets me in the feels every damn time. Thanks for sharing!

So that explosion you didn't understand the context for was another of America's Cold War atrocities—the Bikini atoll for which the swimsuit is named. It was the location of many above-ground and underwater nuke tests which in the movie either disturbed or supercharged Godzilla beginning his attacks on more distant locations such as Ginza.

If you like godzilla, there is a godzilla show on apple tv.

Thank you for sharing your family perspective. It added to the experience of rewatching it with you. It is such a lovely film, with so many characters having an emotional arc.
