The true genius of the Doctor Who concept is the ability to tell literally any kind of story - you can do comedy, horror, romance, high concept science fiction and swashbuckling adventure but you can also do these intimate personal stories. Part of what makes this episode work is captured in the doctor’s musing on 3 in the morning, sharing a taxi. If you’re travelling through all time and space then those moments are as interesting to see as the formation of a new planet, or hanging out with Cleopatra. The next episode is my personal favourite of season one.
